Not a bad idea
If you live on the east coast anyway (and have signal) Waze is much better than any detector. I just read yesterday they have 50 million users to date (I read it on google it must be true). Soon they will only sit in areas that have no signal which kind of sucks because those are normally the best roads.

FYI, there is a new update from Escort for the 360 to help eliminate all the blind spot noise.
After update, I had a tenth the noise from blind spots today.
I have been waiting for this update for one year straight. Way overdue.

I got my first V1 when I got my first Porsche - 1998.

Wow. This was a can of worms I opened. I think I have taken away the following:
1. I am not getting am escort. Despite a fondness in my heart. When I bought my first car which was a 1987 Volkswagen GT in red (I remember I paid 11k for it new) I drove right to a stereo place and has a remote Escort installed. I thought I was so tough.
2. V1s are a safe bed and seem to have a mystique about them that makes them appealing.
3. The Uniden R3 is the new kid on the block and seems like a good value.

Valentine/Uniden/Escort/etc. are not all created equal for various road conditions, ie. sight lines, distance to alert, time to alert, etc.
The Youtubies chronicle much of this as well.

Just got the Uniden R3 with Firmware Release 1.37 and believe me when I say this detector is majorly cool. It's compact, has a very nice OLED display, provides tremendous detection range and has excellent BSD capability especially when it comes to Acuras, particularly those pesky MDXs'. My and my friends detectors were entirely and unnecessarily too chatty with numerous false alarms. The R3 gives true appreciation to the saying "Silence is golden..."

My only radar detector experience has been with a V1 since sometime around mid-2000 when I relocated to the mid-west. I got the urge to get a radar detector the hard way. Shortly after moving back there got pulled over by some young officer barely out of police school trying to impress a young woman he had riding along with him. Ended up getting all the tickets dismissed but it prompted me to get a V1.
Saved my butt a number of times, not only from tickets, but by making me more situationally aware and thus not only avoiding tickets but accidents as well.
Like the V1's arrows, number of bogies, the indication of from which direction the strongest signal is coming. The unit has been quite reliable though I did need to send it in twice when it developed a problem. In both cases the check to cover the cost of the repair -- said check I included in the box along with the V1 as directed when I called in to arrange to send the unit back for diagnosis/repair -- was returned uncashed. Both times I called and was told there was no charge for the repair.
V1 is the one I recommend.

. I also mail the unit in for a firmware upgrade, which the check was also returned with the unit upgraded to the latest firmware. That is why i bought a second unit for my other car a few years ago.it doesnt have the latest tech like the other brands (internet connection for real time info etc.) But is a very solid unit with execellent performance in terms of range, ease of use and warranty.

Do the homework and look at independent radar testing. I like the Vortex guys as they seem to really try to give clear ratings on the product.
Hard to beat the Uniden R3 right now. R3 and the Radenso ProM seem to test at the top for all the qualities you want in a detector.
I was die hard Escort after owning several. The falses started to make me crazy especially since many vehicles now come with lane change assist or blind spot monitoring.
I chose the Uniden R3 because it came out on top test after test. I almost didn't buy it thinking it was too inexpensive, Porsche thinking at its worse. I love it. Light, compact, extremely effective. I will combine with the ALP laser jamming system at some point.

I hear and agree with you Penn4S. My R3 is a very nicely designed, solidly engineered and an excellent value proposition. Thus far, a most satisfying purchase. BTW I too am considering the acquisition of an ALP system but installers in my neck of the woods are virtually non existent and I would like that (ALP) installation done absolutely correctly...

I've been wondering about buying one since they say it's very good for detecting Laser Guns (all guns in my country are Prolaser)..... just don't know if you have enough time to react and brake. Been also looking at a blinder, bit price is at least 3 times more.

If you hear a laser alert you're toast unless it was directed at another car next to yours. You need a laser jammer to effectively counteract a laser gun, no radar detector can help...

Since installing Escort 9500 CI radar/laser jammer F/R I have had NO tickets and have been lasered several times . Unless you have a LASER JAMMER, you will be toast when your laser alert goes off in a standard radar detector.

Got lasered today going south on the GSP. Going ~80. Slowed down to 70 after get the alert. New K40 worked perfectly.
