Default How is your tire wear, and what do you recommend as an inexpensive winter setup?

I have the base 19" wheels, and love them! The car came with Yokohama summer tires. At 10,000 miles the dealer says I almost need new rear tires. I haven't smoked them or done anything crazy so that seems a bit too soon.
What's your experience?

Now, to my main question: for winter, I'm looking to either buy a set of aftermarket or used 19" wheels, or just simply put snow tires on my existing OEM's. Given the exotic dimensions, my choices are quite limited.
Is there a good, reasonably priced setup for winter you guys would recommend?

Get a good set of winter mats, look on eBay for a set of used OEM rims and get tires to fit and you're good to go. Have fun and enjoy.

I'm typically pretty happy with 10,000 miles of life for a set of rear tires. Front tires generally last for about 20,000 miles.

I've tried several brands of winter tires on my 911s over the years. The Michelin Alpin is the best I've found so far. It's really best to purchase a second set of wheels for your winter tires. Porsche OE winter wheel sets go on sale from time to time, or you could consider aftermarket wheels. I ran 19" BBS CH-R wheels with winter tires on my 997 turbo. This was a nice looking setup at a reasonable cost. For my 991, I mounted winter tires on my OE 20" wheels, and I bought new wheels for my summer tires.

Put some Michelin Alpins on OEM and get yourself a cool setup for summer! Be different...

You can sometimes find take-off base wheels fairly cheaply on eBay. For my Panamera, I picked up a set of four 18" Panamera S wheels for $400 + shipping. I'm not so sure about 991 wheels, though - I don't see anything nearly that cheap right now.

Personally, I bought a set of Victor Equipment 20" wheels for winter use. Any inexpensive aftermarket wheel sets (i.e. not BBS) are going to be cast, not forged, but they're still perfectly serviceable. I went with Victor Equipment because I read that they were pretty good for the category - one article warned off the Tire Rack's Sport Edition line because they're kind of soft and easily damaged.

I have exactly the same tires and wheels that yo do and my rear tires look pretty good at 6500 miles. We'll see what happens going forward.

For winter use, I went the TireRack route, buying a set of Starke BC wheels with Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero tires. They cost around $2400 and worked well last winter in Colorado.

I would have preferred to go with narrower wheels and tires for the winter, but none are available for the 991.2, unless you go the expensive three-piece wheel route.

In prior 911s, I was lucky to get 10,000 miles.

Now in the 991, I am amazed and pleased with tire life. Same driving conditions as prior 911s.

I can get 20,000 miles out of the rears. And +35,000 on the fronts.

*yes they get noisey at the end
**no rain

That is fairly incredible. Do you wear them down past the wear bars since you don't drive in the rain? I was trying the same thing with my 981 since I only drive that P-car in the dry weather and at 17k miles, I was showing the chords on the tire.

Yes. Well into the wear bars. That's why they are there! No cords, though. Almost on the verge of slight "blisters", for lack of a better description.

Several guys here are getting well north of 15,000 miles on rear tires. The 991 chassis is very kind to our tires. Cars with PDCC are even better.

After 7k miles the rear P-Zeros are more than half gone. Fronts are fine. If I make it to 10k I'll consider myself lucky. Some say the Michelins aren't as noisy so there's a bright side.

I'll run the summer tires in the winter since winter isn't a lot different here in the Pacific Northwest.

10k is not bad. The rears on my 13 Boxster S (sold) lasted about the same. I should have my C4S soon and I plan to use the existing rims and tires from TR. Michelins. Will go to a local shop to swap them over. Buying a set of wheels with tires is more expensive but in my case, more than expense, I don't want to lug around 50 lbs of of wheel and tire. I also have a nice SUV to lug the tires to the store.

I bought a set of Victor Baden 19" with Pirelli snow tires through my dealership last winter. They were about $3,600. Not cheap, but not as costly as a new set of Porsche 19s. I was open to purchasing a set of 19s from eBay, a Rennlist member etc, but I found it harder than expected. Part of the issue was that mine is a C4, not C2 and there is less availability.

Just remember that offsets on 19" wheels are different for 991.1 and 991.2. And when I looked for winter wheel options in early 2017, almost all the aftermarket wheels have 991.1 offsets.
