It's going to be a long !@#$ing winter.
Three weeks ago I put DDG up for the winter. I figured it was almost December so it's time right? Right?
That was from the day before. Now she's on one of my 4-posts with most of a 928 - in pieces - under her.
Driving my winter DD Audi TTS has made me realize how good DDG is. I just about !@#ing hate driving the TT. I'm 'this' close to ordering winter tires and new wheels and just saying 'eff' it. I'll deal with with salt damage by slathering DDG's belly in CorrosionX.
That's what I did for bits and pieces before I put her up. I did the expected inside and outside detail. Then on stands ...
... and thoroughly cleaned the wheels inside and out. Then ...
... I cleaned up the wheel wells and dirty calipers. Finished up with a coating of CorrosionX on the calipers/
Of course since I did that it's been in the upper 40s and high 50s with nothing resembling rain.
The Turbo has ruined me for most other cars. The Supercharged 928GT is still just as fun - very different, intense, better stereo than the Burmester. My wife's 981CS is worthwhile too. But all the rest? Burn'em.

No winter for me! Drove mine for first time yesterday since I broke my femur back in Sept. Damn felt good to drive again!! 70+ temps here today. Heading back out shortly.

This.
And this.
See this is the salted rock and fiscal hard spot between which I find myself.
I have plenty of evidence of what salt does to cars. Not just cars, but Porsches. And the newer Porsches aren't as resilient to corrosion as the older Porsches. (Well, at least 928s. I hear the earlier 911s had issues, but 928s were always hot-dip zinc galvanized and all the hardware was cadmium plated. But, still, I can tell in about 30 seconds if a 928 has ever been driven on salted roads.)
On the other hand, life is too short and my tolerance too low to drive a car that pi$$e$ me off every day.
I could go get a 991 C4 or C4S (no, nothing prior works for me) for - let's say - $70k.
But, $70k will buy a lot of new parts to replace corroded parts.
It makes no sense to buy a 'beater' 991 to save the 991TT from salt damage.
I've wasted a hour today looking at tires and wheels.
Other random trivia I've learned from commuting in the wife's 981 Cayman S this week (she waits until the salt is about to fly and she was on travel this week so...)
- The Audi TT suspension is unnecessarily and stupidly stiff and this is with 18" tires. This is something I've suspected for a long time but have now confirmed.
- PDCC makes a noticeable difference but isn't 100% essential for driving on crap roads.
- NA F6 makes the preferred driving mode of the 981 be windows down and seat heater on (around town.) But, I miss the missing torque more than I miss a more-than-OK exhaust note.

I have much better winter vehicles, like a blown GC SRT, a Macan Turbo and a lifted GMC3500 DRW...(all 4WD/AWD)
I'd never think about killing the undercarriage of my TTS with salt from our roads here...collector or not. Just because they're AWD doesn't make them good winter drivers.

Last year - the worst snow winter up here in living memory - my Audi TTS was fine and that was with All-season tires.

Come on... AWD and Porsche didn't dip the car's in Zinc for laugh's. You don't have to take the car out everyday but there are days when there is sun in the sky and the roads are dry and not frozen over with salt and sand on them.

Still driving here in NE, but will put it away soon. It's not the snow or salt it's sometimes the other a#$!! drivers. Been lucky this winter so far with the weather. Maybe there is something to that global warming.......naw...
