Correct, it is PTS (paint to sample). It's an incredibly dynamic color, almost chameleon-ish in it's ability to take on the color of it's surroundings.

PS If you could post a photo of the inside of gas lid. In the 997 (and perhaps in the 991 model too), all PTS vehicles had the 'colour' code identified & clearly marked on that location!

Zack: That is an awesome color! Could you please double check for us the actual color as Porsche defines it and the official color code for this vehicle in particular? 789 is a general code for Paint-to-Sample and does not indicate a specific color. 'Slate Grey', a beautiful 356 & early 911/912 historic color, is not yet approved by PAG for PTS to my knowledge. But 'Silver Stone' with the color code Y97 is on the approved list and looks a lot like this wonderful color on the Turbo S! Thanks.

You are correct, 789 is simply the PTS option code. The actual color code is 615, which is listed as schiefergrau, a color on the 1966-67 912.
The inside of the gas lid does not list the color code, though. Not on this car, at least.

Eduardo,
I'm confused. The gray car you posted above was stated as Y97 or slate gray in a prior 991 PTS thread in the 991 section. Based on the PTS info above, Y97 is in fact silver stone and not slate gray. However, the gray car in your photo looks very similar in color to this:

On a historical note, 'Slate Grey' is one of the oldest colors still in used by Porsche. It was introduced in the 1960 model year 356 (as code 6001) and it continued to be offered each year for the duration of the 356 production in 1965! It was then continued with the 911/912 for each of those early years until (& including) MY1969! That is one hell of a winning streak for this beautiful & elegant color!

Ok, that is interesting. See the description of that color in the latest PTS list (attached # 1). It makes a reference to an old 911/912 era paint code - 6601. That was the code for 'Slate Grey' or 'schiefergrau' in 1966/67. The '66', in this case, refers to the year. This same color was '6501' in 1964/1965 and '6801' in 1968/1969! The color in french was called 'Gris Ardoise'. So the color on this Turbo S is indeed 'Slate Grey'.

That is very interesting. I have asked a dealer that has another PTS 991 to please photograph that lid for me to see if it has any markings, like it did on the 997 PTS models. So Zack, where in the body of this particular 'Slate Grey' Turbo S do you see the factory identify this color code '615'? If not, I assume you are reading from a PCNA order document that lists the color code and name of the PTS paint, correct?
Slate Gray and Graphite Gray are very similar, but different. There was a 911-50 on the showroom floor when we picked up our 991 TTS and the colors are very different. Graphite Gray, which is not allowed as PTS for any other car at this time, is a blue based gray. Slate is a green based gray, and is a tad darker. They look very different in sunlight. Graphite Grey is more similar to the Grey Black found the 997 GT3 RS.
Slate Gray was the color of Steve McQueen’s 911S and 930, too.
In regards to color code location, I've been told that the color code should be under the hood, as well as several other locations, but I've still yet to find anything immediately obvious without pulling panels or carpet.

Zack - beautiful color and car! And thanks to both Eduardo and you for an interesting and enlightening "shades of grey" discussion. I'd love to see Slate Grey next to Graphite Grey Metallic as it has been pointed out that Graphite also has green in it and can look "army green" in certain lighting:

Unfortunately, it appears the photo from post 75 that nicely illustrated the green property of Graphite has been removed. It would be fun to examine and compare the complexities of these two greys side-by-side in person.

Zack, I'd be interested in your impressions of grey black. I've always liked it from photos but have never seen it in person. What did you think?

Perfect spec - what color is the interior? Is it Garnet Red or a leather to sample? My all-time favorite color combo on any car is Slate Gray with Oxblood... Looks amazing!!!

The Grey Black is much more blue in appearance when compared side-by-side with the Slate. Both are non-metallic finishes, though, and I really enjoy them both. It's incredibly rare to see non-metallic paint being used in the automotive world these days.
Actually, I found a great comparison of Slate Gray next to Grey Black right HERE.
