Default 991.2 Turbo Market Analysis

I have been looking for a 991.2 Turbo for some time. When I buy a vehicle, I typically do a bit of market research to see how the vehicle I am interested in compares to the market. All I really do is plot the mileage vs price on vehicles for sale on Autotrader. What is interesting about these two snapshots is how much the market changed from March 2021 to August 2021. I highlighted the vehicle I ended buying in yellow. Basically, the car I bought changed in market value by roughly $20k between March and August. Of course this is a high level analysis that does not include details on options, modifications, etc.

I thought I would share this with those looking to buy in this market. All you have to do is plug your mileage where the x is shown on the equation to estimate the market price:y = -0.3731x + 160983

Super interesting analysis - thanks! Of note the mileage depreciation slope has gone way down between April and August, but overall this suggests a mileage-related depreciation of roughly $0.40 to $0.60 per (s)mile. I'm fine with that.

Interesting info. Only issue I see is this is based on asking price and not actual sales, and most dealers these days are advertising cars at high prices, just not sure how many are selling at those prices.

The other option is TrueCar. If you find a car there, click into the listing, it will give you a price spread based on actual sales data of similarly equipped models in your regional area. Maybe it results in similar data but always worth double checking before you make a large purchase like this.

Interesting info.

Agree with others on what a TTS would do on this type of graph / info.

Agree, my thought process around that is presumably March 2021 was more of a buyers' market so buyers would likely pay a lower percent of list price (say 95%) versus the sellers' market today where buyers likely pay a greater percent of list price (say97%). Either way, the market has changed considerably in a short period of time.

Luckily I did that analysis about a year ago for 2015 Turbo vs Turbo S. So I will share that as opposed to grinding through new numbers again...here you go:

So if you plug the mileage into each equation, you can see the Turbo S commanded a $13k premium last year over a standard turbo.

I may update this for a 2017 Turbo S vs Turbo a bit later...

I was wondering how the market has changed recently and here is a new graph for a 2017 turbo as of Dec 2022, using the same methodology. I am not professing this to be perfect, only directional...

2017 Turbo Market:
Back in August 2021 there were 10 cars for sale and as of today there are 19 for sale. You can see the market is now valuing low mileage cars more than back in August of 2021 and any car with more than about 21,500 miles (high mileage?) was more valuable back in August of 2021. This is due to the slope of the line become much steeper (greater depreciation per mile).

2017 Turbo S:
The premium between a turbo and turbo S is about $13,600 for a car with the same amount of miles.

Nice job. I suspect the spread (with cars having similar mileage) is also reflective of MSRP (ie amount of options), number of previous owners, CPO, and to some extent interior or exterior color (at least that was the case when I was running comparisons of the VINs).

I added in some data for the 2014 and 2019 turbo(s) as well so hopefully this has most of you covered.

If you want to estimate where your call falls, just plug in your mileage into the "y" in the equation below to get an estimate.

Fourwheel Trader does a lot of Porsche market analysis on youtube. Here is his most recent video showing 911 Turbo(S) pricing trends.

Thanks vman, saves me some work...Although my data did not include 2015, 2016 for the 991.1 and did not include 2018 for the 991.2, the median prices I have match up decently with Fourwheel Trader:
