Well, my tire professional guy was 90% sure he could fix it and that it would hold. EDIT: That's a Plug AND a Patch!!
I decided to let him have a shot and I would just drive it around the house area for several different times and even take it to one of our local very curvy roads to put some stress on it and see if it leaks at all over the next few weeks. And if it seems to be holding just fine, then I’ll venture up to the mountains and test it out. Either way, I’ll probably end up replacing it eventually unless it seems to hold very good under extreme conditions.

If I decide to put it on the track, I will certainly go ahead and buy a new tire.

while I was there, he rotated the tires on my mega cab for me.

He did all of this for me, begging him to take a $20 tip and give his two helpers 10 bucks apiece.

So far, so good on the tire. Several miles into a local drive, had lunch, got some blood work done, and still holding pressure just fine.

I wouldn't worry man! I've plugged drag radials in similar locations and run them down entirely without it ever blowing lol. Same with many PS2s and PS4s. You'll be totally fine on that with the patch on top of the plug man. It's lame that discount and other big tire chains refuse to save these tires, but I get they gotta make their money somehow.

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring as well and I appreciate the post for sure as reassurance.
For most folks that may not have a direct relationship / friendship with someone at a shop, they're forced to buy a new tire.
I fortunately have several contacts for all sorts of things like this, plus I was curious. Not that I want to be "cheap" but hey, $700 for a tire isn't a joke.
Especially when this new Cup 2 only had about 600-700 miles on it.
I feel pretty confident after my two days of 30-40 miles in this Heat and some curves, that I could go to the mountains without problems.
In fact I may do that in the next several days. Off for another week then some travel coming up, so I need to drive a bit now.

Last update on tire: 3rd heat cycle with several miles in the high 80's low 90's temps and pressure is holding perfect!!

I'm pretty convinced that this would / will hold whatever I throw at it. I'm calling it good.

Glad to hear it man! Yeah I've done tons of racing on plugged "sidewall" tires and they've been fine lol. If it holds for 24 hours it's generally good to go. Maybe a burnout to seal the deal

Enjoy!

It's more about liability is my guess.
I've had belt separation at speed in a plugged tire which caused immediate vibration.
Tire shops likely don't want that on their back particularly with a car and tire designed to approach 200 mph.
Imagine a major belt failure at that speed.

Bingo.

When the vibration started, how much time did you have until it went flat ? How bad was the vibration ?

It happened 30 years ago and to my recollection, I'm not sure if it actually went flat, but a half-egg-sized bubble appeared underneath the tread layer...funniest thing I've seen, I think I was able to limp it home.
Instantly noticeable, not terribly outrageous but it let go around 100mph or so and I remember thinking yep, the plug or tire let go.
