Default New Tires

I'm going to be getting new tires for my 991.2 17 turbo s soon. I do not care for the pirelli tires it has. I've always liked michelin cup 2 or super sports, but had toyo r888r's on my 1100 hp zl1. I'd be curious what you guys like or are running and enjoy. For reference it will be for street use with 1 or 2 track/half mile days. I would use a winter tire for cold conditions so consider these summer only tires. Recommendations appreciated.

N1 Pirelli’s were fine with stock power and hot temps. 1.55 sixty foot is great on no prep asphalt. But, added power on 60F temps the traction went away to 1.66

Going through the same thing this week. Took off a set of Pirelli’s with 2,800 miles on them. Should finish up the Michelin’s tonight.

Great info. I'm mildly modded with exhaust and jb4 tuner and havent had it in really warm weather yet. I'll be interested to see what you choose and how it performs.

The new Michelin PS4 vs the N1 Pirelli. The Michelin tread is a bit wider. Sits wider on the wheel. The 60ft will be the real test on no prep asphalt.

This topic has been covered extensively in other threads, and the overwhelming consensus for a summer tire that might do a couple of track days a year is the Pilot Sport 4S. For track duty primarily, the Cup2 is the all arounder, with the Trofeo R being very slightly quicker with half the life.

Good to know. Thanks for the pics. Probably go with the cup2 for this summer and see how i like them. Worse case, I can switch them out.

Thanks for the summary. I did a search and couldn't really find much. Didn't look terribly hard and honestly always like the most recent info as things are always changing.

The only down side to the Cup2 for street driving is they are pretty terrible in the rain, and of course they don't have too many miles in them. When you drive Cup2 on the street, it puts heat cycles on the tires and they don't have as much bite on track as fresh tires would, so be aware of that.

My goals are different than most as I am looking for launch traction with low noise and great wet grip. That’s why I chose P4S over Cup2’s. Plus Cup2’s grip better with some heat in them to launch well.

For overall daily use the 4S are the best and they seem to do okay with 700wtq I was pushing earlier.

I switched to the Michelin PS 4's and love them. Superb Handling, tremendous grip, and low noise.

I ran PS4S for DEs for two years and Super Sports before. Both are great in the wet. Summit Point like any clockwise track wears the left front even if you swapped fronts. Outer edges on the fronts wore out faster than rears. Just learned from Bob's Radial in Silver Spring MD that they flipped a set of PS4S and ran the "rain" side of the tire on the outside with no apparent handling or wear issues. Wish I'd known three years ago.

Have a buddy with a 2016 Boxster GTS who has PS4S and Cup 2s. He says the Cups are clearly quicker on the turn-in but not nearly as good in the wet as the PS4S nor will they last as long. He uses the PS4S early/late in the year when there is rain in the forecast and colder temps. He drives to and home from the track.

COSTCO sells PS4S. Cup 2 and Super Sport. They have a $110 rebate on four tires. With the rebate beats the Tire Rack price but doesn't include the free 2 year road hazard

Putting 18s and Hankook RS4s on a NTM 2013 BS along with Elephant adjustable LCAs with -2.5 camber for DE weekends. Hope the additional camber lessens edge wear while still allowing driving to and from DE. Pained me to buy two new front PZeros 20s for the fronts since the rears where in decent shape.

Quick test today even though it was 43F outside and not really a summer tire testing temperature . The Pirelli N1's in 43F would 60ft from a best of 1.74 to a worst of 1.82 seconds. The Michelin 4S went a worst of 1.71 to a best of 1.65, a full 0.10 improvement in the 60ft in cold temps. Plus the Michelin's are brand new and need some seasoning . 0.10 improvement is massive. Hopefully that delta holds on a 70F day.

From my Dragy Logs, at 63F the Pirelli picks up grip and the 60ft drops to a 1.65 second pass. Hopefully. the Michelin will go 1.58ish.

thanks for the report.
can’t wait to switch to the PS4.
the best I did the other day in similar temps is 2.1 sec. 60 feet
but that’s with a stock 99.1 tts without Launch control and with the snow winter Pirelli Sottozero tyres.
