Well...The car is awesome..Its crazy good on the track for a straight off the showroom floor street car. But on the road, Meh. Too much power to really experience the car on the road. PDK, which I love on the track, makes the driving on the street much less of an occasion. So I'm looking for a unicorn. Something that has the involvement and occasion of my 308, the comforts and reliability of my GTS and enough ***** and capability to be fun on the 4-5 track days I make it to a year.
As far As I can tell the closest fit may be the Spyder. Great power, stick, open air, and decent track capability - I know lots of guys here have or do own both. I'd be quite interested in your thoughts.

I'd try to find a GT4 without LWBS (blasphemy, I know). It's a very engaging and fun car, in which limits are much more easily attainable on the street. Also great for your few track days a year. And hard to beat for the money.
Or I'd go 991.2 GTS MT and call it a day.
Enjoy your decision.

Wow - This collection of input is exactly what it sounds like in my head. We'll see how this plays out. Maybe it's just not possible to get to that one car that does everything well enough to become that car you just keep. You can see from my signature that's an issue for me.

Wife and I currently have a 997 C2S, Cayman R, 991 GT3, and GT4.
For an all-around fun car on both road and track, the 997 manual is easily my top pick. Second choice is almost a tie among the others, but the GT4 gets the nod.
For mainly track, the GT3. Period.
For mainly road, the 997 still wins, and the Cayman R isn't too far behind. GT4 gets third, and I agree that the GT3 is too dang fast to be properly enjoyed on the road.

The only car I really miss is my Lotus. Vehicular crack as I called it. First one tried to kill me repeatedly (and almost succeeded), the second one had a supercharger ....
Boxster (even a spyder) or cayman just don't do it for me. 911 of any variety, even a slow 911T from the dawn of time OTOH ....
GT3 all the way. There is no substitute for a 911.

Spyder
I enjoyed it significantly more than my GT4 on the street. Not just the open top/ sound but the progressive nature of the tires and the power to grip ratio. I find it rewards pushing in more situations, and vs the GT3 it's similar. Couple that with the PDK only of the 991.1 GT3 and unless I was buying the car primarily for competition I'd need to go Spyder. It's really just so good- in hindsight I even wish I'd gone that direction over the GT4 (despite the fact that I was competing with it, and would have missed the grip, suspension adjust-ability, etc). $.02
Modified Spyder with exhaust and X51 vs 991.2 GT3 manual, that's the real question.

Tough question as I look out the window at this today and know I have the other one coming.. I'm trying to figure out where to park both so I don't have to make this brutally painful decision.
I can say very little short of a manual GT3.2 could make my choice swing away from the spyder, especially when as others have said above, you set it up properly. It's simply the most fun car I've ever driven on the road... or at least on par with the 911R for pure enjoyment. GT3 had better 1up that, fingers crossed

Spyder with or without mods is the perfect car. If in doubt try to find one for sale. Almost two years after arriving on the market, almost nobody is selling one. That speaks volumes.

OP: you mention "occassion". Not sure any current Porsche has this. What about a 993?

Maverick - Thats an Awesome pic ! And likely my dream combo ! I love the color of your spider with the black interior - perfect.
tstafford - Love the 993's. I had one for 5 years, longest I've held onto any toy car. But without significant power / weight mod it's not the right car now.
The "good" news is I can enjoy my GT3 while I chase down a Spyder ( Silver with Black interior my preferred option) or maybe wait to see what the next iteration of Spyder brings - as long as its NA and manual.
