1992-1999. SLR and medium format, only black and white. inanimate objects or female models.
then stopped.
now only iPhone pic.
digital is all cheating. little skills involved. you can fix it after the fact.

Nice work, reminds me of Edward Weston.

I feel the same way. I bought myself a Leica film rangefinder to torture myself into doing things the old way, but it’s hard to move back from digital. I’ll probably sell it. With modern sensors, the dynamic range is enormous - you can push and pull images 10 stops at ISO 3200 on a Nikon d850 (which is currently what I use), you basically don’t even need to think about exposure. The iPhone 14 pro (or similar) pretty much obseletes any point and shoot camera and daytime pics are good enough for almost everything.

^ sad but treu
the days of pushing film to get grains are long gone
ability to burn and dodge to "fix" the negative is useless
but really all the effects are "technical" fun but meh... like many great musicians are technician while the truly great often miss beats, wrong keys, or can hold a tune... but they convey emotion....
few can make a print convey feeling, pain, emotion.....
THAT can't be reproduced by technology

not many can produce the three BW prints above.

\begin OT

When each of my four kids was born, I used the event to justify a new camera body or lens. My youngest is now 10, so it had been a decade since last upgrade. When my 14yo's volleyball team earned a bid to nationals in May, I used the occasion to upgrade yet again. All new Canon R5 mirrorless and multiple RF zoom lenses. Insane tech. Agree that exposure management is almost mindless these days. My primary focus (pun intended) on the new gear is how to guide the autofocus brain to capture high speed sports with lots of distractions in the foreground (e.g., ref, net, setter, etc.) Fun stuff. And the special effects possibilities in both stills and video are mind-blowing, and mind-blowingly cheap. For a few hundred dollars of software tools on a basic Windows laptop I'm able to do stuff that was only the purview of Hollywood studios a decade ago. And having nothing to do with GT3's, baseball is FAR easier to shoot well than volleyball.

^ totally ... and therefore I lost interest. b/c everyone now can shoot...

auto focus now is so fast that most sport if you target your subject it will focus quick enough in my experience. to stop the moving subject as usual I shoot with small F stop , if need be I Digitaly tweak F stop to pull back in the background... in the old days, I got to figure that all out when up pull the shutter live ha

and great, we NEED another $$$ hobby LMAO

I’d argue that everybody now can press a button but few can actually purposefully make a good photo.

point and shoot, spray and pray… yes, the combination of todays lenses, camera bodies and post processing software have made it far easier to take mediocre, unremarkable but at least not blurry and out of focus shots.

but taking a good, meaningful photo that says something, captures something, moves the viewer? That’s still hard as ****.

I like to look at it this way. The middle of the bell curve has move a good bit to the right but the magic moments are still few and far between.
