Default Why not "R" 4.0 in .2GT3

As the title reads. Other than the 9K rpm, why wouldn't Porsche put the "R" engine, along with the 6MT in the .2GT3? This way here, they could've offered the SMFW and would not had to do any extra R & D? Was the 9K rpm the main factor?

Could be in part that the revised 4.0 is more Motorsport than not? The engine in the R I believe is less so. R is intended for the road purist with ability to go on track. GT3 is track car that can do road.

The new 4.0 is a better engine version I'm assuming. Would be logical.

The .2 GT3 is a bargain and better model compared to the R. You can get a custom numbered plate off eBay

R is always R, but GT3 will get more generation to come, like evolution. Nothing can compare to R's combination, although new 4.0L NA has better performance.

More efficient LOL LOL

Anyway, let's just say that the oiling, valve and finger follower issue was improved.
They emberrast themselves early on by selling what they didn't race and so they started racing and as that breeds better cars, voila, CUP tech in street GT3

Now all I can hope for is an RS with this motor but bigger before they go crazy with Turbo's.

Agree, GT cars have tradtionally been all about selling racing engines in street cars. The 991.1 GT3 and RS got away from that, and I"m very glad that Porsche is going back to proper motorsport engines for the .2 GT3 and likely .2 RS.

Reason is simple, the R engine is an inferior unit compared to the new 4.0

Porsche is all about improving the breed, but as we have learned in the past, some classic elements gets lost due to the changing times (i.e hydraulic steering, Mezger engine, and in this case SMFW).

Has anybody noticed the new 4.0 sounds very different than the 991.1 version?

I think that is what most of us expected. But it seems the 'old' motor was max'ed out in its R/RS state; the new developments allow for increases in the RS, R successor, and perhaps other models (GT4RS? Speedster?). I expect we will see a SMFW attached to a future iteration of this motor...

Agreed - why would Porsche offer another "R" with the old engine? AP has already said the SMFW won't be missed with the new 4.0. It's called progress and unless the OP wants a GT3 without a wing, Porsche is releasing a better car with a Motorsport engine in it. What's to wish for - other than to score a commission #?

Oh yes. There seems to be more of what the 3.8 had in the last 500rpm. That angry "i will rip your face off" metallic orgy of engine sound ! I missed that in the 991 RS and I'm glad it's back because for me that was the defining trait that made me fall in love with the 991 GT3.

Interesting point you make re the last 500 rpm. I've only heard a couple of sound bites and it's hard to tell, but I think you're right.
