Me and my mechanic came to the conclusion it was a gt4 chassis with a 911 body. Makes sense for all the talk of a 4.0 in the next gt4, gt4 rs. We were both here today looking at it

Thanks for that pic. Definitely mid-engine. And yes, it's more Cayman RSR than 911 RSR IMO as well. A 911 is rear-engine, period. If it's not a Cayman, it's even less of a 911. I also doubt that job was just done for the RSR. Most 911 GT competitors are mid-engine turbos now, and adding turbos to the GT3s would make them even more rear-biased, so time to put the engine where it belongs. But yes, if Toyota/GM/Ford pretend their Nascar vehicles are based on FWD cars, Porsche sure as hell can call its Cayman RSR a 911 too. He he.

Does seem like a cayman rear structure per this diagram. It would make a ton of sense if it were. Obviously modified, but resembles what my eyes see here:

Looks more like stamping. The holes clearly look metal. Would not be surprised that P started with a basic Cayman bed (why reinvent the wheel?) and then modified as necessary to achieve stated goals.

A 911 is a brand. I would think that Porsche will call 911 anything that looks like a 911 regardless where the motor lies. The purpose is better performance not tradition.

Zactly. When and where has anyone ever seen a 911 with the engine right behind the driver?

Answer: never and nowhere .

For the small number of cars they'll build they can use light die blanking and prototype dies.

Looking at this closely, parts match up nicely to the picture no? this seems to be best explanation/proof of this being a Cayman chassis. Interesting mystery to look into

I was also comparing this diagram to pictures taken of the rear end, and they are awfully similar bar a few modifications as expressed above as well. It wouldn't surprise me at all, at the end of the day as Porsche doesn't print money and isn't on an open budget with these cars. Regardless, 911s and Caymans share the same platform from the rear bulkhead forward, they have been going this since the 996/986. Nothing new. Just the first time they married the concept of a 911 and a Cayman in one package. In it's simplest form, a Cayman chassis with a GT3 R DFI engine. Nothing wrong with that. Just make a street car out of it (if that would even fly with the bosses).

interesting analyses.

can now come a GT4 RS with good alignment/setup + a free breathing 4.0 engine?
can now / in 2017 beat a GT4 RS a 911?
is a Cayman now allowed to show its full potential? based on the 991RSR.

or will just become the 992 RS´s more cayman´s than 911´s - but will still be named 911.

exciting.

Whatever they want to call it one thing is clear, the pressure is mounting...
