The GT2 vs. GT2RS debate is interesting. Personally I don't see why PAG would give up the commercial possibility of an "ultimate" product down the road, hence I'm thinking GT2. But with numerous pundits saying how the 991.2 will be a shortened cycle to give way to the [992] one can see the logic...
The rear diffuser is VERY pronounced I was told. If the R produces almost as much downforce as the RS in the rear with just the diffuser, and this car has both wing and diffuser, there HAS to be something in the front to balance it out. Canards probably unavoidable like you said...

There was no 997.2 GT2 either.
It coukd make sense to keep it simple and just build as many 991.2 GT3 and GT2RS as possible before going to a few limited editions. Money is cheap, we will pay and VW needs it while working on 992.
