Here's a thought, how about the base vanilla Carrera 991.2 with manual transmission (it doesn't have PTV or the option of rear axle steering).

In the Motortrend test (and Car and Driver) it obliterated the M2 (so its hard to see how the M2 can be considered if the 991.2 C2 isn't - other than its a charity entry as BMW seem unable to produce anything that's a true standout, M2 best of a bad bunch as it were - possibly a bit harsh ).

If the winner has to be a "Super Car" its hard to top the 911R - its a beauty.

I drove the M2 the past week at Homestead Miami Speedway. I wasn't expecting much but boy I was wrong. The M2 is a fantastic car.

In what respect? I'm genuinely interested because from a handling perspective its not as good as a Cayman GTS or a base 991.2 Carrera (have a look at the Motortrend and C+D test results e.g. fig 8 and skidpan - good but not brilliant C2 ~1.06g Vs 981CGTS ~ 1.04 Vs M2 ~ 0.99; C2 ~ 23.7s Vs 981CGTS 23.8s Vs M2 ~24.1s)

Its not as quick as a 991.2 Carrera and is about on par with a 981 GTS.

Superimposed on this is a very mediocre interior and it doesn't even sound particularly good.

It seems to me a lot of journos just gush because, well that's what they do, typical herd mentality. The data don't support the assertions in terms of handling or indeed speed.

What the data do support is the M2 is close to the M3/M4 perhaps with improved steering feel (I have driven late model M3/M4s and was underwhelmed)

I think it begs the question - why wouldn't you include a 718S or a C2 in various Performance Car of the year awards when its pretty straightforward to demonstrate the significant performance gaps between them and the M2 - I guess a mixture of vehicles adds spice and gives everbody a vehicle to cheer on and thereby generate more subscriptions

Let me fix my post:
The M2 is a fantastic car... for the price.

M2 $50-55k
Cayman GTS $75-80k
991.2 C2 $90-95k

Ah yes agreed, close enough to M3/M4 performance for a fraction of the price

If they don't give it to the 911R then they should change their tag line "The Thrill of Driving" and seriously have a look at their own ethos moving forward. It's partly becauae of the media why thia car was created... Manual trans in GT car etc

As always, they can manipulate scores to make whichever car they want to win, win. So the better question is which car they'll want to win this time. And yes, I have the feeling money has something to do with that decision.

Don't be misled about the handling of cars based on steady-state g's. That's mostly a measure of tires. Handling is all about what happens once the available grip is exceeded (and the subjective qualities therein)...

I don't think it will be a Porsche. My guess is the McLaren 570S. My opinion is the 675LT Spider (Car Magazine agrees).

Very true. The way a car handles and drives is not measurable and trying to judge a car by its stats alone is moot, imo. I have a lowly e30 m3 that is faster than Porsches and other exotic cars in the twisties and is a hoot to drive as well. The stats on it are horrible but it's the best driver's car i know.
