Your First Real Car: Why It's Probably Special
I know many of you guys have owned a lot more cool cars than I have, but I have read many times people commenting that they should have kept their first car, or the best one was the first one. I think this says something about that first one, and maybe I understand why the first one is so special.
The best car I owned prior to my GT3 was probably my 1971 Demon. That car cost me $2,100 in 1983, and it holds a special place in my memory. It was fast, cool and unique. I loved it. But that car had NOTHING on my GT3. And I am not talking about the technological changes that have occurred in that time. My GT3 is just in a different league, and on my Demon's best day it was never this awesome in 1971. They are literally oceans of difference between that car and this one.
I think it is that massive leap that sets your first real car apart from any car you buy after that. I can't think of a car I could buy today that could possibly be as awesome and as big a leap from that Demon to the GT3. Literally, that was a 300% better car, and even if I bought a 918 tomorrow it would only be 50% max better than my GT3. I am not sure even that much.
So the first real car we buy will always be special for that reason alone. Add into that the fact that it also more than likely represents a big leap for you personally, financially, etc., and there is just nothing like the first real car we buy.
I admit, I am attached to this car. Although it's just a car, I can't see myself ever giving it up. I just don't think the incremental level of enjoyment I'd get from any other car would come close to matching the enjoyment I have with this one, vs my old Demon. And if I sold it, I would probably just want it back. Like a good woman, when you have one, you keep her happy. Otherwise, regrets!
What do you guys think? What was your first real car? Do you still have it? If not, what made you sell it? Did you think it was greener on the other side of the mountain?
Do you wish you still had it?

My first real car will be the next! 🤔
I never regret in selling each of my car, I sold them because I did whatever I wanted to do with it. Modified it, drove it and definitely enjoyed it. So for me it's just time to get something better.

First car - 1977 Dodge Ramcharger 4x4 (Dodge's version of the Blazer or Bronco) had a removable roof, 4" Rancho suspension lift, 33" BFG All Terrains. Two tone Brown. Super fun! I had the roof removed probably about 80% of the time. Had all 4 wheels at least 3' above terra firma more times than I can count. Camping, mud bogging, offroading, ummm...extra curricular activities (not talking homework here hahah). That truck meant freedom and everything that came with it. Thank god gas was only about 65-80 cents/gallon to fill that 40 gallon gas tank!! Bought it at 14 years old as a non-runner, missing one of the doors, the entire front end and drivetrain. Great father son project building it so it'd be ready by the time I was 16 and old enough to drive it, and it was! Definitely miss it! The guy who bought it off me was a friend of my dads and later rolled it. Everyone was safe, probably because of the rollbar. But sadly, the truck was totaled :'(

First "real" car was a 1995 Ford Escort GT. No contest compared to any of my current cars, performance wise. But, it kindled my interest in this great hobby. Also, that was the car I was driving when I met the woman who is now my wife. We put close to 180 K fun miles on it, hitting almost every state in the CONUS. Good memories!

My 1st car was a 1980 VW Beetle 1.6 (flat-4 dual carburetor) Midnight Blue. I got it from my dad when I was like 15yo. I did lots of mods to the little bug: 14" sport wheels with radial tires, lowered, bumpers and running boards painted in midnight blue, tinted side markers and tail lights, sport exhaust with one central tip a la 550 spyder.
I am used to say that little bug is the reason I am a Porsche guy nowadays.

Spent my summers in H.S. scrubbing pots and pans in a French restaurant to save $$$ for my first car. In the meantime using my dad's '72 Vega station wagon for dates. Real chick magnet. More like repelant.
Finally saved enough to buy a car by graduation. Bought a '74 TR6. Delft Blue with powder blue interior. Remember the day my dad took me to look at it. Remeber Led Zepplin Stairway to Heaven coming on the radio on the way. Song forever linked to that ride with my dad. Loved that TR6
Took me all through college. Met my wife when I owned that car and dated her in it. Great little car. Very peppy. Very British. Not quite as fast as a 240Z but competitve. Yeah, electrics were dicey until you worked out the issues. Mine wasn't too bad. Turned on the radio to work the wipers. Nah, kidding. Leaked like a seive until I used about 2 tubes of silicone along the door trim then it was water tight. Practically would float.
Little ol' lady in a Oldmobile ran it over one day on my way to law school in Newark. Just missed taking out my legs.
On the hunt for a prisitine one. Very notalgic about cars. Sometimes you don't have to spend loads of money on a fun car that you will love.

First car was a 66 Mustang. First real car was Laguna seca blue aE46 M3. That care was a awesome car. Most people at the time didn't have a clue what it was other then a Bmw. Great quick car that was perfect for city driving.
