I have been experimenting with recording audio of my 991GT3 exhaust with an external microphone connected to an AIM SmartyCam GP (bullet camera). Does anyone have a recommendation regarding microphone choice, microphone position, snaking microphone wire from cabin into license plate area, etc?

I ran the SMC2 without a mic in my GT4 and it sounds horrible. I just bought the CAN extension cable that has the built in mic based on a number of recommendations.
V02566240 – CAN Bus + Integrated external microphone harness - L = 4 mt

Im also using these to cut down on the wind noise:
Ill run the mic straight back to the trunk area in the GT4.
Sub'd...and will post video of my setup post May 18.

I got good audio using external mic that I clip to the back. I am using it with my iPhone and route the cable next to my passenger chair out to the trunk. Check my YouTube channel for sound sample Flying DutchmanGT4

I have the external microphone and microphone fur but the audio was absolutely horrible. Very disappointed in the Smarty Cam 2. Everything I tried, adjusting the input level, etc. didn't change the quality. For me its been a waste of $1,000.

I was told by someone here to mount the microphone next to or behind the license plate. You will get no wind noise just exhaust noise. I have not tried it yet so don't know if it works

Test video with lapel mic connected to GoPro with extension cord. I've since switched to smarty cam. Mic has mini fur on end and is simply wedged into partition seam in rear under back glass. Not perfect but decent for 2 min install.

Thanks guys. I will test drive my new audio setup this weekend and will post the video on YouTube if it works. Either way I will list my setup and equipment.

This is how it sounds with Audio Technica lapel mic placed in the rear tow hook hole. The mic clips a bit and cuts off some bass (too much volume for it, and it's optimized for voice frequencies) so a better mic would give better sound there. It's easy to route the mic cable there completely inside - no exposed wires anywhere.
