The car was functioning normally, but making a crazy crunch sound from the rear when warmed up, in low gears, at low speed. It first seemed like suspension or the rear steering, but they have authorized a new transmission, so it seems something was broken in there.
I'm not sure there are any examples of an early warning still functionng broken gearbox with almost no miles and zero hard work. The car has 250 miles on it and has not seen north of 4.5k.
Wish there were recordings of these noises. I get noise from the transmission on my 16, but I think it's normal. Can't say it's as much a "crunch" sound though. It's more like a teeth clattering sound, if that makes sense.

Exactly... I've come to believe these noises are normal.

That clattering sound at low speed is normal. My 2015 did that and this 2016 does as well. That is a completely different and benign sound. The sound I was having in this car was something I have never heard on this platform, and it very much sounded like a crunch or the sound of rough contact in the rear of the car.
It typically would only do it after being warmed up, and during light inputs of throttle in the low revs. The only confusing part is I could sometimes get it to do it over bumps or when straightening out the steering coming out of a turn. That threw me off a bit and made me think it was not the gearbox. However they looked at everything in the rear of the car and the determination was that something gave out in the transmission. I wish I had recorded the sound for reference.
