Probably misunderstood your testing waters and only built for flippers. As you know I completely agree with you about not going far enough with the 991 yet. Still waiting for my 991 edition. Just seems like there aren't enough of us left.
And a lot of people fighting over the 991rs.

I'm in the "why" camp as well. I mean, why not price the car at 300 or 350 from the start and keep the premium themselves? The answer could be that they are throwing the dealers a bone (as many of them were the ones that sopped up the excess 918 inventory)

i think it has more to do with the fact they have a very strict HP (perceived value) and pricing strategy. they keep their lineup very strictly adherent to their incremental pricing.

Indeed. I'm willing to bet this is it.

The unfortunate part is that they don't have proper enforcement (on the dealers), nor do they care to actually satisfy more loyalists (who may not have 918's), while still balancing out their need for exclusivity.

PAG is far from the worst at this.

Did the Sport Classic follow the same price : power algorithm? I thought it was the costliest 911 at the time.

Yeah, good point. The Sport Classic / Speedster both didn't really follow that.

Greenlantern, we can debate the why it was set up... but as a fact they are creating limited production numbered vehicles now. Similar to the concept Ferrari started and others outside of the car industry have done and it has worked. A birkin bag...... good outside example...

Not sure it really matters though.

Promise the 911 r will not be the last example of this. More to come in the future I am sure.....

Well put 918man! But ... I wonder, do you think the PTS window is open on the Birkin bag?

You can't debate facts.

What do you mean "Creating limited production numbered vehicles now"? They've been doing that for a long time.

What's new is that the # of people who'd normally get these cars has increased dramatically.

+1 the world economy is working to allow more people to buy more expensive stuff. More people can afford GT3RS or above level cars, mclarens, lambos, ferraris than ever. So, all these marques have to spread product to new locales in China, India, Thailand, etc that were 100% not buying insanely expensive cars 15-20 years ago. I'd imagine even since the 997 4.0 came out there are thousands of new "elite level" buyers for this type of car due to market conditions.

Porsche has ALWAYS built limited edition cars- a lot of them were never even sold here in USA- some had to be imported from the gray market

Just in the last 30 years- the 959, 964RS, 964 Rs 3.8, 993 Gt2, 993 RS 3.8, 996RS all got sold in limited # to other countries and the complaint at that time was "damn porsche bring us the good stuff" - which is how we ended up with the 993TT-S and 964 RSA.

GL i know you get it but a lot of people on this thread are trying to debate facts and it boggles my mind.

I think your point is valid, however not sure 100% accurate as you lay it out. The list of models you mention above are not all created for the same general purpose. Some are real motorsport division cars created for a purpose some were just marketing exercise to help moves some more cars....

What will be the value of all these modern "collectibles" in 50 years when the electronics have degraded to the point that the cars won't even start?
