Tire/wheel insurance- worth it?

Its basically a gamble. First thing to do is try to knock the price down, there is always flexibility.
I've had both rear tires replaced, plus 2 instances of road rash fixed free of charge. In reality I'm still in a deficit based on what I paid. YMMV.

It's a ripoff. There is a reason that finance guy at dealership works so hard to convince you to buy it. Also, read the policy. The guy selling it to you will tell you that the policy covers wheel damage and will imply that you get a new wheel if it is damaged. Fact is, most of the polices only cover wheel replacement if the wheel its damaged to the point that the tire will not seat and hold air.

that actually makes sense. My road rash looked pretty bad, but the repair job was very good and I can't tell it was ever damaged. AFA tire damage, the policy I purchased specified replacement NOT repair, I got 2 flats and both time the tire was replaced. We all know how expensive the MPSC2's are.

I'm on the other side of the fence, and it really depends on what you pay for it. My cost was around 1100.00 for 5 years, and historically I have picked up nails in tires. Last Septemeber I picked up a nail called the dealer dropped off the car tire waiting, and the bill was about 600.00 no questions asked I paid nothing. I'm sure I will get a flat a year just my luck. Good luck with your choice.

I was at 2,500 for 5 years. 1,100 and I would have gone for it probably. I figure these tires won't last that long and then I'll be using road hazard insurance from tire rack anyway.....

Yikes no joy at 2500 I agree. If I remember correctly the insurance will cover replacement tires you purchase, and they become damaged. One more nail and I will be more than made hole with 4 years left.

This is really a gamble as getting a puncture or wheel damage sometimes is just not within your control. I've paid tire insurance once for my BMW F10 550i $750 for 3 years and had 10 tires replaced and one new wheel because the low profile Goodyear run flat tire kept getting bubbles. I once paid $1750 for a 2 year tire insurance for my 991 C2S and never got anything. I did pay $ 2000 for 5 years for my 991 GT3 and just got a puncture 3 months ago, cost was $600 to replace for the insurance company. It all comes down to your risk appetite.

Better not come to Houston without the insurance. With all of the construction going up, there are nails, staples, bolts, etc all over this city! Then, there are the pot holes. Beats me how a city with this tax base cannot fix its infrastructure! Therefore, I guess it depends on where you live. I bought it, because "securing your load" only seems to be a recommendation down here and not a law.

Insurance makes sense when you generally can't afford the covered scenario occurring without it (e.g., home fire insurance, or auto accident liability, etc.), or if there is some sort of mistake in pricing for your area that creates some arbitrage.
I don't feel like anyone here couldn't afford replacing their tire when the time comes. So most are paying more up front than it will ever pay out.
Otherwise, all these tire insurance companies would go out of business.

I have never bought this stuff before; however with all the construction around my house the last few months I have paid $1500 in new tires. When I purchased my GT3 recently, $1200 for 5 years coverage seemed like a bargain. Not to mention all the potholes have torn up a few wheels lately. Of course, now that I have it I won't need it.

What ever you do do not use these guys: Safe-Guard Products LLC. The coverage is not worth the paper it is written on.

For my 'tire' insurance, I just get the replacement certificates via Discount Tire. I think they are $50 and cover tire replacement. I know they are losing their shirt on my Sequoia. I've had 5 tires replaced in the last year, each time costs me $30. I've done the same on my P-cars. As far as wheels go, I've never had to replace one or even get one touched up. I don't let my wife drive my car therefor the curb rash risk is nearly eliminated. If I showed you a picture of her car's wheels you'd cringe.

I'll own up. Due to the POS nature of trailer tires. I got the DiscountTire replacement thing. Already paid for itself.
My wife has a serious issue with depth perception (common? lol). While her wheels are good, the lower lip on her car is ... patina'd.
