Chris Harris: GT3 RS vs. Aston GT12 vs McLaren 650S

CH did an excellent job of narrating each cars qualities both on the track & street. Still would love to have an RS but will have to "settle" for my GT3. Oh well, the wife & I are off for a fall color tour with our local PCA club this afternoon in the 3.

What's ironic is that in the UK the current asking price of an RS is probably closer to £100k more than that for a 650S Spyder.
So they're not even equals price-wise.

One of my friend I got to track with is a professional Race car driver. He races Ferrai Challenge, F3 and Mini race team. He owns many cars, CGT, 458 Specliale, F12, 650s 997.2 GT3 rs, 991 gt3, 991 TTS,gtr, 650S, M4 997.2 Cup ..... and have rs,488, F12 TDF coming.
His best time with 650s is 1:15 on our local race track. (one passenger)
Stock GT3 he did 1:12.28 on Dunlop tires.
In Chris Harris test 650s is 0.12 sec quicker. May be maclaren gave him a special turned 650s or the RS has worn tires?
650s is faster on straight line for sure. However, on race track I don't think it's faster than rs.

Agree,
650S is better in straight line, but the RS is the king of the track, particularly if you include multiple tracks, not just one with the longest straights. And it will do it all day long, every week, which I don't expect the 650 to survive.

The argument of getting into a 650 for the same price as an RS given the RS markup is correct, but if you do, the RS is the safer place to put the money. Assume an RS will trade at 325k currently and a particular 650 sells for 325k. In a few years time the RS will likely be at least 325k if not more and that 325k spent on the 650 will now be worth 225k.

Got a chance to take out a 650S Spider this weekend for some canyon fast driving. So i had the chance to see what it was like vs my GT3 on roads i know with 13 other Porsche's ( friends of mine). you can see them on the second video ont he run downhill
What a beast of a machine.... i want one badly now.
you definitely feel how light it is.
it looses out to the GT3 in:
1. turbo lag ( you can feel it for sure)
2. sound ( obviously NA vs Turbo)
3.gearbox (PDKS is a faster shifting gearbox)
the rest is no comparison imo. wish i had to the chance to take it to the track to see how it holds up. but in 6 hours of hard driving. not one fault or error. temps didn't even move from the center position.

in regards to turbo lag- you just have to keep the revs up and the lag goes away- the tuning is a lot different than the 991TT which is based more around bottom end torque. The 650 needs to be up way high in the revs like the GT3 to show it's full potential.

For anyone testing a 650s I recommend taking it out in the worst weather possible as I think that demonstrates just how capable the car is. I happened to try one in torrential rain just above freezing point with a lot of standing water on the road. The car was amazingly stable and reassuring for something so light with 650bhp. I particularly enjoyed the supremely accurate and nicely weighted steering. I want one too and I'd even buy a set of winter tyres for it!
