Default NAV-TV users - how to force rear camera on?

I'm about to have a front and rear camera NAV-TV system installed. I read the installation instructions and they describe how force the rear camera on, but this requires tapping the steering wheel mute button twice, but this button is not installed on 991 (but is on other Porsche models).

On 991 models you can press the volume **** to mute. Will pressing the volume **** twice activate the rear camera? If not, is there another work-around?

I realize the backup camera will activate when the car is put in reverse. What I'm interested in here is to activate the rear camera when moving forward.

I've tried the defrost double tap on mine, no joy.

OTOH, looking at the cam while moving forward gets me sick so I'm glad I can't turn it on.

The manual describes this as activating the front camera. I will have front and rear cameras. Maybe this works if you only have a rear camera?

When I had it installed I asked that the double tap of defrost button function as forcing the backup camera to come on.

No front cam. Just rear.

Make sure it's the rear defrost button. Works for me.

Also, make sure it's a deliberate double tap.

In other words, tap (see that the light comes on to show defroster activated), then tap it deliberately again (so that the light goes off to show defrost deactivated), and in about 1.1 seconds, the rear camera should pop up.

It's either 1.1 or 1.3 seconds.

About $900 for the control module and rear camera. Yes, there are wires. Here are the installation instructions:

Yes, there are wires.

I had it installed professionally by someone other than me. I can barely handle an electric shaver without doing permanent damage to my ugly face.

Took about 2 hours to install.

This trick works great, thanks for the tip. For those that don't have a backup cam it's such an easy mod and inexpensive. I highly recommend it.

How much does this mod run? And is it a DIY install?

I have the multifunction wheel, and for some reason the double tap is WAY too easy to trigger.

If I mute and unmute within 15 seconds of each other, the camera comes on.

I've contacted NavTV to see if there's a way to adjust this, it seems wrong as the manual indicates it must be within one second.

This is a nice feature for on-track use also... I love my backup cam. Some of you guys have a lot more confidence than I do!

I wear my GT3's lack of backup camera like a badge of honor.

Until I hit something.
