Default 15' GT3 Break In Guidance

A few weeks away from my 15' GT3 arrival.

I've heard many opinions about how to best break in the car.

I'd like to solicit opinions experience here...

Let me know how you broke your in and any additional input...

TY!

You'll get a 100 opinions here...so choose wisely.

A good place to start would be the manual which you can find here (plus fun read while waiting) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bym...Rms/view?pli=1.

Also, congrats! Tell us more about your build and goodies...

You'll hear everything from "drive it like you stole it right out of the dealer" to "definitely wait the 2K miles to go above 4K" to everything between. I heard of a guy who launched it out of the dealers lot as he was leaving...

With my C4S I tried to keep it low RPMs under 2K miles. I also tried to vary the RPMs a lot (also recommended)

I only have 150 miles on my GT3 and have only gone above 4K RPMs once accidentally.

I took it to the track first time at 300 kms. Second time at 1300 kms. Break in accomplished. Will go another time to the track before 3000 kms.

Read the threads and formulate your own opinion. I've used the factory recommended procedure on multiple cars and never had an issue. You might want to change the oil around 1000/2000 miles. I changed the oil in my 991 GT3 at 1000 miles and sent in a oil sample for analysis. I do this on every oil change with a 5000 mile max.

Enjoy the new car.

It's not just the engine.....tires, brakes, gearbox, and all moving parts, require some time to break in. At the very minimum, running a couple of tanks of gas through the car before you start hammering it is a good policy and personally I'm even more conservative. Driving like you stole it from the dealership, or tracking the car within the first few hundred miles/KM's is a really poor idea, IMHO, unless you're not planning to keep the car for any length of time and don't care whether you abuse it.

As has been mentioned already, read through the hundreds of posts on this issue and make up your own mind, but the above is my $.02.

stay below 4k RPM for first 10k miles.. i did that with mine and it only burns 1 quart of oil per 100 miles and only billows smoke on every other startup.

Nah, also note the claim of a quart of oil being burned every 100 miles....Laguna was being facetious/sarcastic.

Default How?

This discussion is fine and theoretical. I believe in the recommended break in period. But please help me understand one thing.......how in the heck do you limit revs to 4,200??? I believe that is not humanly possible. Is there one honest GT 3 owner who can say truthfully they observed a rev limit of 4,200 for 2,000 mis? Heck I was being virtuous and good intentioned on a Sunday drive and I go to pass a truck on a country road I look at tach and it says 7,500 pull the paddle frantically and before I can get back in my lane the next gear is already in the 7k + range....... I mean heck was does the owners manual say about that stuff? Seriously one better get their paddle fingers and throttle foot highly trained to millisecond synchronization. Staying in auto does not alleviate this unless Porsche wants to program in a temporary break in algorithm to shift PDK in grandma mode.
I need throttle lessons I guess just really clumsy with that 4,200 thing

To correct my earlier post I did go a third time to the track at 1800 kms which was my first time with porsche club UAE so I had to follow a lead car and that driving didn't put a huge strain on the car though revs did reach 8000 regularly.

Regarding oil changes I had my previously owned 991 carrera S first and second oil changes at 16000 kms and 31000 kms respectively. My first 458 oil change was at 20000 kms. My first gt3 oil change will happen at 15000 kms. I had to add a bit of oil to it at 1500 kms.

You need to drive in sport mode to follow break in guidelines as it has no kick down. In regular mode the car kicks down ridiculously from 7th to 3rd causing sudden loud engine chaos at high rpms.

That's good to note--wasn't aware of that.

I found that manual mode, rather than either auto mode, was best to use during break-in. No unwanted kickdown, no delayed upshifts if you gave it too much throttle; you have total control of when to upshift and downshift.
