Default Porsche 911 GT3 RS getting all-new atmospheric engine

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/01/15/p...engine-report/

"At the Detroit Auto Show this week, Auto Express spoke with Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz – who also happens to be head of engine and transmission development for the entire Volkswagen group. Hatz revealed that Porsche has developed a completely new engine for the GT3 RS, and while previous rumors suggested the RS would go turbo to fill in for the lack of a GT2 (and make the most out of its displacement), Hatz confirmed that it will be naturally aspirated. Considering that Porsche rarely goes downwards when it comes to 911 engine displacement, only upwards, we'd expect the new RS to pick up where the previous 4.0 left off.

The new GT3 RS is also expected to pack a more extreme suspension, aero and stripped-out interior, but those hoping for an old-school approach may be disappointed to learn that the new RS will (at least at launch) only be available with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – though a manual version could follow if there's enough demand."

Thanks Tony. One wonders if "all new engine" means all new compared to the previous RS or all new when compared to the new engine in the GT3. I tend to doubt that it's the latter. Autoblog was not always on the mark with predictions about the 991 GT3 so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

"though a manual version could follow if there's enough demand"

Thanks for the post. This is a good one right here. Didn't know we had an option.

IIRC, Autoblog and others were using the exact same language back when they were speculating about the GT3 and we know how that turned out.....

It will be pretty interesting to see if a manual is offered and the results on the track. I guess the stick cars will mostly see the rears of the PDK ones. I for one would not be happy to drop $180K+ knowing that I will be guaranteed no chance to win in a ceteris paribus competition.

From all the people I have talked with at Porsche, it is going to be amazing. I am feeling fortunate to have the Gen 2 GT3RS which is incredible and now my GT3. I am done and will watch from the sidelines knowing mine aren't too bad! I seriously can't wait to see the final results.

I really, really doubt there will be any sort of three pedal 991 GT3 RS. It's not logical. Why offer a true manual? You've got everyone by the ***** with the new GT3. Why short change yourself and all the efforts that have been put into the PDK-S?

Is there demand? Of course there is, just like there was demand for the 991 GT3. Did Porsche care? No.

Will they care about demand for the 991 RS? No.

Did you hit the nail on the head? You betcha.

It doesn't make sense if they do, but I could be wrong.

Any updates regarding the rumored lack of RWS? Given how much time Porsche claims the RWS saves on track (if the RS doesn't have it) the RS must be substantially upgraded elsewhere compared to the GT3, as it can't be undermined for lap times to the "lesser" car.

I saw some information (don't remember where I saw it, sorry) that Porsche is trying to develop a lighter battery so they can keep the RWS.

My guess is that RWS stays...

My guess is the New RS will have 500hp 4.0L, aero, re valved shocks for the aero, light weight panels and different gearing.
