No doubt Ferrari did this (like BMW) to make its returned, off-lease cars more marketable to the next buyer.
It's not really a gimmick - it's liquidating information asymmetry. Some people have misconception that Ferarri maintenance is $5K-10K a year and would not trust manufacturer or dealer if they tried to explain that it's not that much. So those potential buyers would act based on that wrong assumption, thus valuing the car less. But making maintenance free liquidates this asymmetry, allowing uninformed or sceptical buyers to value the car more accurately. So I'd say it's a good, value-creating move for both Ferarri and it's less informed customers, and completely neutral thing for informed customers.

He has to lament its loss in order to maintain his bona fides.

There's no conspiracy here. He genuinely misses it. He's actually adapting to new cars and new technologies, otherwise he'd be out of a job, simple as that.

A conspiracy requires more than one individual. When he discusses the 458 there are no lamentations for the MT. The MT need not even enter the discussion since there is no one to pander to among the Ferrari base, and he seems to hav adapated to driving the car well enough to not require comment. The MT enters the GT3 discussion because he knows his audience and what is expected.

I think he is genuine. I have gotten over the whole MT thing. No money shifts either.

Watch the video again. He'd love a manual transmission in both cars : Speciale and GT3.
