Default Which tires has higher performance?

Hello,

My first post in rennlist. Anyway, I finally got my GT3 3 weeks ago. Now I'm taking it to every single possible track day.

I need to order some set of extra tires. I looked at the tirerack.com, and there are 2 original equipment:

1. Dunlop Sports Maxx Race with 80 UTQG
2. Michelin Pilot Cup 2 with 180 UTQG

I've never even heard of Dunlop Sports Maxx Race. Anyone ever use them? Should I stick with the Pilot Cup 2s? BTW, I'm shocked at the increase in wear rating from 80 to 180 from Pilot Cup to Pilot Cup 2. I wonder if it will really last longer.

Welcome to RL!

Both were supposed to have been OEM...but as of now, I don't think anyone on RL who has taken delivery (regardless of market) has reserved a car with the Dunlops.

I also find that interesting. Did any one receive their GT3 with the Dunlops?? I thought I read some where that the Dunlops were better in the rain/street driving and the Michelin for the track but I am not pretending to know ant thing about these tires I bet Sam from Houston would be able to comment

Thanks. I guess I'll be the first one to try it. I just ordered a set of Dunlops. I feel like it may be a little bit more stickier since it has only 80 utqg and its newer.

BTW, how do you guys like the 4 wheel steering? I've never driven a car that has such a small turning radius. I can make a U-turn close to 30 mph without even squealing the tire. Pretty amazing.

Bob Woodman tires...possibly Big O tires and Frisby Race Tires as well

Expensive for sure, but possibly more grip than the other two though...if that's what you're looking for

Trofeo R is probably your best bet.

I have had a set of Dunlop Maxx Race on my other car and I wasn't impressed. Pilot Sport Cup 2s arrived today so I'll be able to compare shortly, but I expect them to be sticker. According to Porsche the lap times between the MPSC2 and Maxx Race were similar, but feel was better on the PSC2s. That matches my experience- the SMR has a very soft sidewall, great for ride but not good for turn-in. They also wore poorly, and I was able to overheat them and get them greasy much more easily than I would have expected. YMMV.

Welcome to Rennlist.

Trofeo R are the best for tracking from my experience. Will be switching once I've worn the michelins

What's the status on people fitting the Trofeo R to the 991 GT3?
Has anyone got actual wear, grip, temps, times, please?

Having run both the Dunlop Maxx Race and Cup 2 on my BMW, the Cup 2 is clearly faster on my car at least.

The Cup 2 handles heat better than the SMR- it starts to get greasy above 150F, but the Dunlop goes off sooner.

I think the treadwear rating is a bit of a fudge- Michelin plans to make a run at the SCCA street-tire classes with this tire, and like many of the extreme performance summer tires treadwear is rated higher than it really is. That said it is wearing much better than the Dunlop, so it's not too far off.

Believe Sam is from Plano. Some of our Northern brethren can be a bit sensitive about that!
