Z/28 and GT3. Tell me why this is a bad idea

I'm at a point now (age, success in biz, debt free) and having owned bunch of really fun cars, I tend to judge cars on their own merits and don't engage in auto-snobbery. At least not like I used to when I was a dyed in the wool BMW weenie. Shoot, I love my pickup truck b/c it does everything I need it to do, include tow 14,000 lbs of fiberglass around when I need it to, and I drive around town in it totally incognito.
From the vantage point of judging the camaro based on price and its own merits, then it's pretty compelling, even if I don't hold on to it long term.
I don't go in expecting Lotus lightness, Ferrari interior, or Porsche steering delicacy.
But it does bring to the table a whopping hamfisted dose of 'Murica!
Luckily I have some time to sort things out cause GT3 is MIA and m order for the Z won't lock till next month

I had a close encounter with a Z/28 this past weekend at Laguna Seca.
It's a big car.
I've had my suspicions that the car has problems with running too hot, which will compromise performance and reliability. Car and Driver did an article that had the car running hot after only 3 laps. Some forum members have reported high temps as well.
Below is video of a Z/28 that was in front of me. I don't know who the driver is, but supposedly he's a real racer (unlike me) and knows what he's doing. The power down the straights was not nearly as impressive as I thought it would be. Keep these things in mind while watching the video:
1) pay closer attention to the view on the bottom left. The tow hook view on top is running wide angle, so the distance gap being shown is not accurate. The bottom left view is using the standard lens, so there is no distortion
2) I only have 320hp
3) The BMW M4 pulls harder away from me than the Z/28
4) The first drag race at 1:32 shows the car walking away, but not at the pace you would expect for a 505hp car
5) The 2nd drag race at 3:17 shows the same.
My personal conclusions are that either the car makes less power than advertised, or that heat soak is slowing the car down significantly. IMO, a car made for track days should be reliable lap after lap without any issues with heat. I haven't heard of anyone with heat issues in the new GT3 or the old GT3.

You are also a much better driver than the z28's.

Frayed,
You may want to use the "park it next to" test.
You imagine coming upon these two cars parked next to each other. Which one do you want to take home?

This took me from the M4, to the Cayman GTS, to the Z06, to the C4S, to the GT3. now I'm waiting till it arrives in November, so I can take it home. lololol

ortho, given the questionable lines of the Z/28 driver one can't help but conclude the term "real racer" is misleading in this case. Were you perhaps able to find out what PSM mode he was running in?
Here's Conrad Grunewald from last weekend at the Glen taking it easy - his first run in someone else's Z/28 (with owner as passenger):
It'll be interesting to see what a decent driver in a stripper Z/28 does. No doubt we'll be seeing more on track videos in the coming months.
