New flat 8!
#17
yes--exactly thats what I believe too. Porsche is currently testing a Cayman with this new engine..this is no secret anymore. When, and if they will use such an 8 flat is unknown..but they are developing a new engine. If the new 991 Gt3 was the "future"..they wouldnt do this.
Both Mike and 10GT3 have very valid points..we discussed this already endlessly here..and not much new we can contribute here I think. Lets wait until the CUP 2014 news..but I would guess that the 2014 will use the same engine ..if so the chances for the 991 GT3 engine would dimish rapidly.
I think that given current regulations a 6 Cylinder is the wrong choice anyway - no matter if 9A1 or 997 GT3 RSR engine...maybe we are beating a "dead horse discussion" here..while there might be a completely new and other path/approach..
All I know, if there would be a new 8B used in racing cars and if it would be used in a 960 (without hybrid crap)..then this would be maybe my new "dream Porsche"..

The question you have to ask yourself is why Porsche would spend the engineering time and development costs on a completely new (except for re-machined block, timing change, and head bolts) high revving DFI engine, call it their new motorsport engine, and then use it only in a few hundred street cars?
If they had no racing plans for the new lump they could have just warmed over the existing 9A1 powerkit motor, stuck it in the new GT3, and been done with it, saving their resources for whatever the replacement for the flat 6 was going to be.
Just my $.02.

although I was imagining that any 8 cyl would see its way into the alleged mid-engined platform aka 960 ... or am I hopelessly out of touch?

The flat 8 idea is crazy though - if you're going from 6 to 8 cylinders then just use the already sensational 90 degree V8 that was developed for the RS Spyder program. There is no way the F8 is going to be superior to that and does it really appeal to the purists so much anyway?

Larry. I cannot say as I honestly do not know. I am told an announcement will come at the Frankfurt launch of the 991 GT3RS. At this stage Im inclined to believe Porsche may give a new designation number to the GT3 engine as to date they have been only saying its based on the 9A1 architecture but the talk at the factory is its an entirely new engine from their point of view. Maybe with the GT3RS they introduce a few further changes to make it more unique. Certainly when you look at the factory technical notes on the engine it does seem to be quite different than the 9A1 even in the ancillaries with a separate wet sump oil pan and scrubbers, baffles then the finger rockers and the new internals etc.
If I were a betting man as much as I like the idea it could be an 8 I would have to put my money on the 991 GT3/RS engine being announced as the platform for teh new motorsports engine from 2014 (late 2014/early 2015) factory race cars (cup+RSR).

I think the same thing. I have high hopes and anything but would be very disappointing in the direction that Porsche heads.

looking back at previous engine evolutions they seem to fall into the following categories:
- improved air intake (7.2 RS over 7.2 GT3)
- improved heads/intake plenum (6.2 RS vs 6.2 GT3?)
- capacity (4.0 RS - I know a gross simplification)
not sure which of these *might* be available to the RS ... 4.0?

You think this will happen at this years Frankfurt show, i,e the one in Sept?

Mind bending thoughts you guys are throwing out there.
THAT could be a 4.0 replacement
