Posting in both forums, let’s see if I can do the poll right this time.
To replace my 08 997.1 C4 cab manual as my only car, which one would you suggest? I would prefer manual but could be convinced on PDK given the engine of the 991.
Assume I’m paying the same purchase price.

Where do you stand on having the third pedal? If you're remotely on the fence then I'd go 997.1
Neither is going to be a bad choice, but thinking long term 10+ years, I'd rather have the 997

I have a 2006 997.1 S Cab I bought new. About to hit 120 000 miles on the odo.
I got the 991.2 GT3 a few years back. I have an emotional attachment to my 997, but everything about the GT3 is better. It drives better, it is more road compliant, it has newer tech etc. The major downside is interior noise. Not sure I would be happy driving 120000 miles in a GT3.
I know people are gaga over the 997.2 GTS, but no way am I spending sticker price for 12-15 year old cars. Same would apply to a 997 GT3. Only 997 generation car I would remotely consider is the 997 GT3 RS 4.0, but that is never happening because they are really expensive, or a 997 Turbo S in a manual, because that is the last of the direct linkage turbo manuals.
Not sure I would be interested in a 991.1 GT3 as a replacement for the 997. Not worth it (to me) if no manual transmission.

note that the clutch on the 997 (perhaps I am thinking the 997.2 and not the .1 here) is noticeably heavier than that on the 991 (.2) so if you plan on being in stop/go traffic at all then I would go PDK otherwise 997 all the way (may not compared to a 991.2 though)

Thanks for the correction. My mistake. I now remember that the 3.6 never had an S version, but the 3.8 did have an S but only in PDK. What is interesting is that the 997.2 GT2 RS still used the 3.6 engine and still had a manual 6 speed. I assumed incorrectly that the Turbo S used the same engine.

To me it depends on how you plan to use it. 997 GT3 has a very heavy clutch. When I was driving mine a lot (daily) it would bother my foot. If I were using it as a fun car/heavier daily car, I'd go 991. If it were more of a fun car w/ some daily I'd go 997. Also there is the manual vs pdk, and smaller vs larger car consideration. I put 50k miles on my old 997.2 GT3, and had a 991.2 GT3 touring, and now a 991.2 GT3RS.

More “liveable” per the poll description is the 991. I daily drove my 997.1 GT3 for about 6 weeks and it was great. I had to so I did. Definitely fell in love with the car. For long-term daily use or any sort of road trip that isn’t just for fun the 991 is better - quieter is one of the main things for me - squeaks and rattles in the 997 is a buzzkill anywhere other than the track or a short fun run. How could you go wrong - different great cars. 997 will go down as an all-time great. 991 won’t, but I prefer it from behind the wheel.
