so I've been struck by the I want a GT3 bug, specifically the touring 991.2

I've gone down the GT3 youtube rabbit hole (and enjoyed it very much!)

there is a real emotion and viscerality to the GT3 that comes out in the those videos (I have never driven one or even sat in one as a passenger)

there is no question I want one

but the "practical" side of me does wonder if the same thing that happens to ME with all cars, will also happen with the GT3, i.e. I get used to them.

the first 3 months or so whenever I make a move up to the next level, I appreciate the differences and are wowed by them, but by 3 months, I get used to the experience and then find myself searching for the next level again

for those of you who switch cars a lot, did the GT3 end the chase for you?

For me it did...I still buy other cars but the Touring is my forever car. Fits me like a glove and it grabbed ahold of me instantly.

Something about that darn 991.2 Touring. AP sprinkled some magic dust in each and every one. The most visceral car I've ever driven. The 4 RS has some magic also but can't match the touring's secret sauce.

I'm at 30k miles and I wish it were 300k miles.

I had a 997.1 GT3 and it didn't do anything for me. Sunroof, not very fast etc...great car but not special IMO.

 

Yes, i've owned all sorts of sports cars and my .1 RS (with some mods) made me stop looking. Would i take a new GT3? yeah but no other car at this point.

 

So far it feels like a keeper and I usually cycle through a new car every year.

My 993 has been my forever car. GT3T is feeling that way so far.

The 4.0 is pretty much fully developed for an NA flat 6. Subtle differences aside, I don't see Porsche making an engine meaningfully better than it, particularly nowadays. I doubt they'll make a smaller car, either. Granted, there will be chassis refinements, but it's not like the 991.2 needs any more help on the street. From a performance standpoint, there isn't a lot to improve on the platform for a street car, which is what the Touring is.

So then it comes down to looks. I don't doubt Porsche may make a GT3T in the future that will be more aggressive with more presence. But I doubt they'll make one prettier.

The 991 GT3T feels potentially end game for a water cooled 911.

Yes, only to be eventually replaced by the right 9.1 3RS , but not exactly longing for one in a bad way.

 

My touring is a coffin car for me and one that one of my kids will inherit when that time comes. Does it stop me from wanting other cars? No! I don't think a car exists that can do that? They are like watches, soon as you obtain your "grail" you're off looking for the next one. But.... with that being said, if I can look at a car as a forever car that says a lot.

 

I've yet to drive anything above or below that drives, feels and behaves the way this car does in all environments.... I guess YMMV but for me.... This one's it for me...

It depends upon how you'll use it. The more you ask of it, use it for driver development, etc. the more you'll appreciate it for the long-term. And the more you ask of it, the more you'll come to understand it's darn hard to replace.

Don't have any ideas whatsoever on how I'd replace my .2 manual winged. Possibly with a .2 Touring, but I get some use out of the wing, so probably not.

I would have the greatest angst getting rid of it. More than any other car I've owned. E39 M5 comes close, I can still see it driving away like 15 yrs later... but I'd be sleepless on the GT3.

As others have said, it is definitely part of the permanent collection. It is very visceral and I love how it is under the radar. Other cars still come and go but this one will be around for a very long time.

 

For the OP, if your history is that you get used to cars and always seek the next level, then sadly it’s very unlikely the 991.2 GT3 is going to scratch the itch. The 992 gt3 is a definite step up in performance due to the front suspension.

There’s a chance you will prefer the 991.2 feel, interior, etc but if you get used to cars and get wanderlust, there’s a clear next step to always tempt you with the 991.2.

 

Seems to be a common theme that everyone regrets selling their .1 GT3 RS over others. Curious why?

 

It is worth trying one even if you don’t end up keeping it, they are that good.

It has been my experience that all enthusiasts still have the itch, even with a great car like a GT3/RS. It’s just the way it is.

I also think the market may impact the willingness to hang on for some. I don’t think there is better value than at GT car at MSRP.
