Default “Upgrade” from 991.2 or extend warranty?

Hi Rennlist!

I have a 2018 991.2 GT3 PDK with 18K mls, a lot of those on track that has been FLAWLESS really. I am very happy. So happy I have never felt the need to get a newer one when this one has been so reliable and good performer. The thing is, considering moving it to Austin and continue tracking it vs buying a near new 992 with the same purpose? Concerns are of course cost of up coming services and potetnial failures I might experience against the $100K differential of getting into a 992. My car has an extended warranty although not sure about coverage and track use of those. I KNOW the new one is always better but there is always an uncertainty with a new one and mine’s (pardon the pun) track record and maintenance has been excelent. And of course there’s the $100K to dish out. While I am at it if any one can reccomend a good Porsche Shop in Austin area?

Thanks!

As an alternative, have you though of a 991.2 RS??
Clearly a better track car, and "more different" to the 991.2 GT3 than the 992 version.
Friends have told me the 992 is like the 991.2 with better turn in and the benefits of the 325 rears...
You also have the 325 rears on the 991.2 RS....
I had a 991.2 GT3 and a 991.2GT3 RS together for 2 years, (still have the GT3) the RS was much better than me as a driver, I was as fast in either car, but that was me....
If you are a 10/10ths driver I think you would like the RS much more than the 992, and maybe a bit cheaper...
If you have not driven the 991.2 RS you should before making a change, it is iconic!!

YMMV,
Cheers!

So your concern is reliability mostly. This is completely anecdotal but one small local dealer had to replace two 992 GT3 engines already (they haven’t sold a lot more than that). They never needed to replace a 991.2 GT3 engine. $100K pays for a whole lot of service and you can keep it invested until needed (probably never).

Yes I have! I’ve driven it but not in real anger as it was not my car. It happens to be my favorite car ever after seeing the Kevin Estre Lap of the NR. I did not mention it above just for the fact that they are just 1-2 years younger than my non RS and I am weighing the option of a very new one vs maintaining an older car.

But yes that may be a very good option.

thanks!

This is EXACTLY my reasoning and what I am going on about. But doing my research.

thanks!

Keep the 991.2 … and add a 981 GT4 Clubsport for the track?

I used to do the racecar thing but I have been spoiled by the GT3 and ease of driving to and from the track on a street legal car. Still I decided last month in that regard to split my strategy and ordered a (much) cheaper Rush SR. I know, nowhere near a Clubsport experience but budget minded, raw, race car feel and that way I still have my options open on another street legal GT car.

Some of the early 19 RS still have a CPO warranty for a couple of years...
Mine was licensed in Feb 2019, bought in April '19 by me with 100km, and an ADM (dealer games in Canada)...
But with CPO until Feb '25, that is two years from now!
And I do not think mere mortals could ever break that car!
Still see it at the track and regret selling it.....
Cheers!

Wait till the 992.2 for them to work out the bugs

You should be fine with extended warranty if bought thru the dealer.

Austin Area Shops to start with...that could point you in right direction.

For what it's worth, I have an early 991.2 GT3 that required full engine replacement at 5K miles. Never tracked either.

Sounds like a keeper. With proper track maintenance, failures/repairs that amount to current 991.2 to 992 price gap are rare. You'd have to be additionally motivated to acquire the 992. I'll be in the same spot shortly with CPO expiration, don't have any plans to move on from 991.2.

Can I enquire what caused the failure? Did dealer advise?

Regards,

Mark
