981 GT4 to a 991.1 GT3 or 991.2 GTS
Hi All,
After 2 wonderful years of ownership I've decided to sell my 981 GT4. Car had clubsport package and LWB's and was used as a daily driver - 10,000km in 2 years, never on track as have dedicated race cars that I have access to.
Loved the enjoyment from driving it daily - engine, handling and gearbox were perfect but quick daily commute and running errands it was more challenging. Will probably kick myself for letting it go but onwards and upwards!
Now I'm very stuck with what to get next so would like anyones opinions on who did the same jump / recently purchased a 991.1 GT3 or 991.2 GTS.
991.1 GT3 - similar experience to the GT4, with 18 way seats more useable but the engine problems scare the hell out of me, even though I run an Automotive company, Im not in a personal position to buy the car and lose money when the residuals drop after the warranty expires or replace the engine. Engine rebuild isn't a problem IF internals were available. Found a nice low Km 2015 car with the F series engine fitted. Are they really going to depreciate that much in 2024-2025 when the warranty expires?
991.2 GTS - drove one yesterday, thought in Sport Plus would be far quicker, but was in traffic on a highway so couldn't really stretch its legs further, also everyone says the noise is great - it sounded VERY quiet and subdued to me even with the sports exhaust open - was a 5 min drive from cold.
Driving experience with the 2018 luxuries like reversing camera, nice seats and the sunroof was nice and something for the daily commute that is welcome over the GT4! Would i miss the GT4 too much going to a GTS or did I just not really get the chance to hear the engine sound and push the car to highlight its performance?
Price of the 2015 99.1 GT3 and 991.2 GTS are very similar - unsure where those residuals will be in 2-3 years time for either car...

If the 991.2 GTS spec has rear axle steering (RAS) and sports suspension (SPASM) take it and don't look back (assuming all else looks good) - excellent car.
In the configuration above and with MPSC2 its close to a 991.2 GT3 in track performance and a much better daily driver.

I couldn’t get used to the turbo whine in my 991.2 S. Great car in all other respects. I had a 991.1 GT3 and thought it was a great car. Even with PDK the sound was very mechanical and fast PDK shifts were hard and entertaining. I only sold it because there was a lot of confusion about the engine and warranty which ultimately got straightened out. No right or wrong here. One thing to consider is that any major engine work out of warranty on either car will be expensive, but the 991 engine (1 and .2) engine has a very good record thus far.

A 991.2 GTS with our high flow cats and tune is a rocket and has a much better exhaust note than the stock car... but it's not a GT3 by any stretch in terms of tone. Ultimately your decision is based on your use case, and having had the GT4 you've had a taste of the GT car life. You would expect to be around 560hp and 570tq (Crank) with our setup.

991.2 GTS has PASM but cannot see RAS on the spec sheet.
Have you owned a GT4 and GT3 previously also or just the GTS?

Hi Dave,
The car probably won’t see the track but spirited driving will be frequent. Due to my small commute I don’t sit in traffic or have lots of highway hence I managed to live with the GT4 as a daily.
Your GTS setup sound great - could be in touch if I go that route!
thanks for the reply

I've owned a GT4, 2015 GTS and now a .1 GT3. When you take tracking out of the equation the GTS might be the best choice for street use when you consider comfort and driver aids like F&R sensors and infotainment. And on the street don't discount the torque / low end of the GTS over the .1 GT3 which does all its work at 7K plus. The PDKs in the GT3 was leaps and bounds better than the PDK in the 2015 GTS but that may be different / improved in the MY car you're looking at. The GT3 wins on exhaust sound, 9K, overall rawness and wing/aero. There are times I miss the GTS comforts when I'm out on the street. With either car you'll love the extra space in the cockpit. When I got back into a GT4 after having both the 911s I was surprised how much more confined it felt.

I owned a 991.2 GTS for a few years and now a 991.2 GT3 Touring and they're worlds apart IMO. The GTS was an excellent car (mine was a 7MT, but never loved the shifter), overall very capable and very daily-able. The .2 GT3 is a different level with the 6MT and that engine and sound at 9K. Like others said, if you want to daily the car, I think with an exhaust you'd enjoy the GTS a lot. If you want a GT car, .2 if you can swing it. The .1's I had similar concerns as you from a value/residual standpoint (great cars overall), but unclear what happens when the 10 yr warranty is up.

And that's very similar thoughts as I have on the GTS vs. GT3, guess will come down to final purchase numbers and driving the GT3 to determine which suits me more for daily use.
Main concern for the GT3 is appears a lot of people coming out of them now due to 12-36 months away from warranties on the engine expiring so will there be a market in 2 years time for resale and at what number.

The engine failure on the .1 is a real concern. You’ll have a couple of years remaining on the replacement warranty. You could enjoy it and hope you win the lotto. I suspect Porsche will have to do something once the warranty expires. It’s a great car otherwise and a definite step up.
