Default Tire question

I’m about to replace my Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s on my 2018 991.2 GT3. I’m looking at Tire Rack and pricing varies a little bit as does availability for what seem to be the same tire sets. The only difference is in the sub description some say Porsche (N1), Ferrari (K1), Ford Performance (FP), and Audi (AO). Is there a difference between these tires or are they all the same? Thanks.

Yes there’s a difference. Manufacturers make small tweaks with Michelin based on their specs. I’d want to run the same spec tire all around and preferably all N spec (Porsche spec), or standard (no manufacturer spec).

They are not the same. Stick with the Porsche N1.

In some cases the specific dimensions (tread width, etc) vary for the same nominal size. Found this on a set of Audi spec vs N spec. Recently heard from my Service guy that due to lack of supply for MPSC2 N1, they are recommending the Ferrari K-2 spec as a substitute for 991 GT3.

Ok to use what's available, but ideally sticking with the same designation all around. Read up on the various designations from Michelin and you'll realize the same tire size may use different construction and compound depending on what it was designed for. I think Cup 2's for Porsche may have 2 or 3 compounds across the width of the tire.

You mentioned Tire Rack, so I checked, Both OEM tires, the MPSC2 N1 spec and the Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 are available. I would go with the Dunlops. I've used both, and have had better overall experience with the Dunlops.

Maybe its a regional thing, but the rears have been backorder forever, and still are in Northern California https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...2XLN1&i3_Qty=2

Tire Rack is great and I've bought lots of tires from them, but have you check with the local Porsche dealership? They generally have them available.

The dealer is a good suggestion. Also, Discount Tire was able to source me a set of Cup 2s for my Carrera T recently. It only took them a couple days to get the rears. Not sure they are competent to do center locks though so there's that.....

I just checked TireRack, and they have the Cup 2 N1's in stock for stock GT3 sizes.

Tire rack sells to dealers and gives them priority so checking with the dealer if they don’t show inventory is a good bet. Of course it will cost you. I also recommend the Dunlop’s but again the are more $ than the cup 2s

@Zedcat, Did you run the Audi spec cup 2? Was it the front or rear that was the Audi spec and could see a visible difference compared to the N spec or feel a performance difference? I have not mounted the ones I have yet, bought them when the N1's were backordered. thanks

Revisiting this as I can’t source the rear Porsche spec tires from either Tire Rack or my local dealer (August). The fronts are available. The rears being the 305//30ZR20 (103Y) XL Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tire. Dunlops are on back order as well (rears, not fronts).

That's a tough situation. So what do dealers do when they get a GT3 with a damaged tire? Just let them sit?
