Default New owner tire question.

New owner here and absolutely loving this car. I came from a '19 M5 competition with all wheel drive (I would always drive it with 70% rear and 30% front drive). Last night getting on the freeway I turned onto the on ramp, and the rear stepped out pretty well, and pretty quickly(I did not expect this at all). Almost felt like I hit ice. I wasn't heavy on the gas, and I have taken that ramp hundreds of times. I have Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 that originally came with the car. 0317 build date on the tire. The temp was in the low 50's, and I had only been driving for maybe 1 minute before this happened. A couple of questions. Are these tires really that temperature sensitive? Should these tires have been replaced due to age during the CPO certification? I appreciate any and all responses.

Thanks in advance.
H

5 year old tires and 50 degree temps are not the best combination. I would get new tires if I were you. You could argue the CPO side but safety is more important. If you like to drive aggressively at all then a good set of Michelin PS4S' and call it a day. Plus you are going from a heavy 4WD front engine car to a lighter, RWD rear engine car. Dynamics are different for sure. Something to keep in mind.

Agree with the above, especially the difference in driving dynamics between the M5 and the GT3. RWS can also take some getting used to, as it helps rotate the car at slower speeds and can feel like it's stepping out.

The first time I tracked my GT3 the rws made me think I was sliding around a sweeper, but it was just the rws.

I would wait to use them up, just get used to them when cold. I am sure they will be great when hot.

Replace those tires. Trust me (and anyone else that says the same).

If you aren't going to be tracking it, put a set of Pilot Sport 4 S N0s on it. Or put the PS4S N0 on for street driving and rain events, and get a second set of wheels/tires for track/autocross.

I wouldn't say that 5 year old tires are extraordinarily old but yes, it does seem that performance tires especially on a GT3 seem to be affected by temperature a lot (even more so than other performance cars I've owned).

On the OEM Sport Cup 2s, anything less than 55 degrees or so, and it would step out even on a slow start/turn. Traction control would immediately kick on, but I know not to push it when it is colder when I'm at speed. While I'm certain I can control the car in an unexpected slide, I'm not about to take take that risk with an expensive vehicle and a guardrail/concrete wall next to me :P.

Yeah the dunlops sport max 2 and the michelins cup2 need some heat to hook up. I’ve felt a lack of traction in 50 degree temps before.

But I also noticed jumping from a turbocharged bmw to a gt3 the throttle response is vastly more sensitive. The GT3 definitely has enough power to wag its tail a bit under power if you put the hammer down early coming out of a corner.

But if the tires are old it’s cheap insurance to get new tires.

I replaced the OEM 5 year old tires on my 16 RS and it was night / day. Prior to the change, the car would wheelspin if I punched it in first, now it doesnt.

CPO criteria is 6 years for tires. I’d replace them given they’re 5 years old and you had that experience. Well worth it and you’ll enjoy the car more.

This. I mean should they be replaced before you hit the track? Yes. Could you safely use them on the street utilizing some common sense and restraint? Absolutely. But a lot of what your feeling is a combination of the temperature outside and not being used to the car.

Totally makes sense! Thank you.
