Default 2016 991.1 GT3

Are the 2016 GT3’s affected by the known engine issues? From what I found online they receive the 10 year 120k mile warranty but I believe these have the “G” engine which is not affected? Can someone confirm?

All 991.1 GT3s potentially have the FF issue but as Porsche progressed 2014 thru 16 there were changes made to each new version that made the issue less likely. However you can have a 2016 with the original G engine that came in it that is not the replacement motor.

I own a 2016. Production date was august 2015, it had an earlier G motor. That motor went out summer 2020 at 17k miles. Now has a G6.

Appreciate all the info. Is there a way via vin number to tell if the car has the G6 or not?

No, the only way I know of is the label on the top right of the deck lid. I have a G0 engine ('16 GT3) and no issues so far at 17,800 miles. There have been very few G0 failures due to the finger follower issue that have been talked about. The oiling system of the first gen G series is the same as the RS. The engine is identical except for the bore and stroke. Frankly, there have been quite a few failures in the RS but not systemic like E and F series engines in the '14 & 15 GT3's.

I believe the G6 variant didn't get released until >2017, so no production .1 GT3 will have come equipped with it from the factory.

Do you mind sharing what the failure was caused by?

This is correct but it is vastly different than the E & F engines. The E engines were the original in the 14's and early 15's. The F came in the 15's and replaced the E failed engines. The G came in the MY16 and was different in how it oiled the engine, along with the new coating on the FF;s.

I really wish we could get away from this E, F, G nonsense. Those letters are bound to model years and not the iterations of updates which came mid cycle.

Yes it's confusing, while the G motor in the MY16 was much better than the E/F motors it's still not the final replacement version.

Does the replacement engine (G) that Porsche supplied to those cars that had a failure (E,F) have a higher performance?

Same thing as earlier versions. Finger follower issue, the misfire at high RPM problem.

Anecdotal opinion here, it doesn't feel any faster but feels smoother.

Doesn't make any abnormal noises, blow giant puffs of smoke every eight times you start it, etc. The old one certainly had some personality to it.
