Insurance, HDPE, etc.....
I know there are a lot of threads on this topic but they are all at least a year old and policies change, so....
I am trying to put coverage on a 991.1 GT3.
I am looking at CHUBB and asked if they cover HDPE use if the track is HDPE-only (no competition, such as Club Motorsports in NH). I didn't really expect them to cover an incident on a track but thought it was worth asking. What came back was a little surprising, particularly the stuff in bold... "We exclude all losses related to racing. Knowing that a vehicle would be used in these types of events would make it ineligible to be included.
(3) Racing. We won't pay for loss to a vehicle that occurs while the vehicle:
is being operated in, or practicing or preparing for, any organized or unorganized race, speed
contest or other similar competition, including but not limited to timed events, rallies, sports events
or stunting activities; or is on a racetrack, test track or any other track or course of any kind."
Thoughts, perspectives, advice appreciated.

Get standard insurance through one of the regular providers. Don't bother mentioning HPDE or related.
When you want insurance for HPDE or the like get it through OpenTrack, Hagerty, etc.

I've had a good experience with Hagerty, they seem to cater to enthusiasts such as ourselves. I currently have them insuring a vehicle with coverage that is 3x the KBB value. They actually have both HPDE/Trackday and Motorsports insurance, depending on your needs.

From my limited research, HPDE insurance costs about 1% of the stated value of the car, per event day, with a sizable deductible. IMHO, you are better off self insuring but everyone has different risk tolerance.

I have a standard car insurance policy with an in hand rider that covers DE, with an agreed upon value and a $1,500 deductible. In my case, it saved me over $3,000 from the standard track policies. This policy is with a AAA premium carrier. Anyone that is purchasing a separate track policy and does more than 4-5 events a year is wasting money. I have posted about this year and suggest that anyone interested do some research.

I had a strange experience recently shopping for insurance. One thing that should always be noted when discussing auto insurance is one's location. In my case I am in NYS. I have 4 adult operators and 5 vehicles in my household, 4 daily drivers and my GT4 which is a weekend/track car for me. Until now I have had a standard policy for a major carrier for all cars and I insure the GT4 on track with Hagerty, Lockton, etc. per event. My problem is that now I have two teenage boys on my policy which increased the annual cost by about 250%. About 40% of that total cost ended up being the GT4. It was very excessive for a vehicle I barely drive. So I went shopping for a separate policy for my GT4 focusing on specialized agreed value carriers.
Anyway the interesting/annoying thing that happened is Hagerty refused to insure my GT4 with an agreed value/street policy. I told them openly that I use the car for HPDE (because their form asks the question specifically). They claimed that they were aware of my track use since I had used them and they could not insure my car because I lived in NY and they could not exclude track usage/damage from my policy. But every policy I read has language limiting coverage on a race track? I found their reason very strange. Has something changed in NY? Below is the language I typically find in NY policies. While it seems like it will cover HPDE, I find the language a bit too open to interpretation for my comfort.
I ended up settling with Grundy Insurance at a cost of about 20% of what I was paying on a normal policy. It ended up being a lot less costly than Hagerty policy so I guess it worked out... I will continue to use singe event policies for HPDE.

Any vehicle, located inside a facility designed for racing, for the purpose of:
a. Competing in; or
b. Practicing or preparing for;
any prearranged or organized racing or speed contest.

How does this work? Through a broker? In all of my research, I’ve never been able to find a company that will cover HPDE as a rider to a standard policy. I only do non-competitive (mostly private) track days and hate paying for private insurance premiums that assume I’m doing wheel to wheel racing.

Most of the reader’s cars are valued @ > $100k, so road insurance needs to be with Hagerty.
For DE, Open Track covers both car & track damage. If you track regularly, buy the annual policy.
Unless you’re rich enough to self insure, don’t risk owing and not having.
