they can but they are also abrasive and will etch the surface, if ever so slightly...

Good call above on the dish soap. I use Dawn blue dish soap on any stains that I suspect have an oily component to them. It works very well.I keep a small bottle in the laundry room and even use it for oily stain on clothing befor washing.
