Default 4K+ RPM noise culprit: buzzing ash tray / coin cubby

After nearly two years of chasing down the buzzing/rattling sound that appeared to be coming from the rear of the car at 4K RPM and above, the dealer and I finally figured out it’s actually the little plastic coin cubby in the center console! When it is firmly pressed down, the noise goes away.

The problem is that they can’t figure out a permanent fix. They tried putting some felt tape around it, but apparently this is only partially effective.

Anyway, I know a bunch of us have been trying to identify this particular annoying sound and wanted to share the discovery. Also, I’m hoping someone else may have figured out how to get rid of it . . .

Several of us have identified the ac control panel as the source and had it replaced under warranty.

I don’t think my iPhone would pick it up. It’s a very low volume chattering sound (tut-tut-tut-tut-tut).

I already have the full Akra race system installed (headers + side muffler delete + center muffler delete). You can still hear the little rattles and buzzing.

I chased after this for a couple weeks when I first got my car. It was the little ring loop on a key chain that my daughter had made for me that was connected to the key!

My “ash tray” does same thing... Now passenger seat area is buzzing... (no buzz when someone in it)

I have that same buzzing from the center cigarette lighter plug cover. I was thinking to dampen the cover with some noise reduction material like Dynamat or Noico.

Same here... Never heard it, until one day we had the windows up. Slowly accelerating in gear, hit 4k+/- RPM which nails the frequency necessary, and that area gets a loud vibration.

I can support, pushing down on the "coin tray" dampens the sound.

Windows down, I never hear it.

All they do is add felt everywhere... It's not a huge secret and not a compromise to the integrity of the car or anything. Plastic will do plastic things over time.
