Default End of NA engines, bigger turbo engines

Interesting and sad article for us NA engine lovers.

I just saw a similar post in the 992 GT forum.

At least we get a full product cycle before EU7 descends on us. And maybe Walliser gets his wish and we get a smaller 911...

Very interesting read from many angles. This tidbit is quite something:

Where would the 911 go if Walliser had a clean sheet of paper to work with?

"Maybe I would do it a little more sporty than the 992. If I had a wish, I would make it maybe smaller."
The head of Porsche’s sports car division directly admitting the 992 should be sportier and has gotten too big? Juicy stuff.

Not surprising comment really - at our recent 2020 Wheels Performance Car of the Year the 992S got its ticket punched by a AMG GT63 S - the guy that did the track testing described the 992S as "nice" (not kidding). At the end of the day the 992S was awarded the gong for its breadth of talent.........I've heard many a sporty saloon car described that way (There were three segments drag strip, road test, track test - the AMGGT63S won 2/3).

It’s not the content of the comment that surprises, but that Walliser was the one to utter it (and, ostensibly, for the record). I see it as quite a self-takedown for Porsche’s head of sports cars to lament that their just-released flagship sports car is not sporty enough.

It.’s hard to know what will be possible, or not, that far into the future. I remember the mid 70’s era of emission control seemed to spell the death knell of well running, let alone high performance cars. Even the 930 was restricted compared to non-US versions. Convertibles were thought to have gone the way of the dodo. Ever tightening environmental regulations aggressively pursued must eventually impact the countries where manufacturing is relatively unregulated. The entire automotive landscaped may be unrecognizable in 10 years or less.

2 years ago I notice Porsche announcements used the words
"....GT3 will stay NA, unless it is not competitive in Racing..."

Job Description

IMSA seeks a talented professional to join in the position of Series Manager, IMSA Porsche GT3 Cupbased in our Daytona Beach, FL corporate office. This position is Responsible for overall program management of the Porsche GT3 Cup Series for both US and Canada Championships, including procedures, event staffing, budget management, as well as competitor and industry relations.

16/3/2020

And the 991 RSR is a bit of a frankenwerks special - e.g. engine placement not really consistent with the 911 GT3 ethos etc.

It also sounded like Porsche would consider still making an NA GT car for the US and Australia, even if european restrictions are too severe to allow a european version. You can just tell he would prefer to make a smaller NA GT car.

I'm glad he and AP are running things. They are responsible for still giving us NA GT cars with a manual option while the rest of the european car companies have gone with 100% turbo/DCT/heavy barges. The last NA sports car with a manual is likely to be a Porsche.

There is no one alive I’d rather have as “Mr. 911” than FSW.

The possibility of a special powertrain for the US and Australia is remote IMO.

I just see a Electric motor somewhere in the system keeping the Flat 6 noise at acceptable levels.
Nice read thanks for posting the link

Bigger displacement, turbos...well one thing's for sure, the car will have torque.

Wait so the new euro regs will limit power per liter? Wasn’t the whole point to turbocharge small motors to create greater power per liter and thus less emissions for a given power level?

Whatever. I’m just glad I don’t have a particulate filter.
