OT: Tax resident of NY, bought car in Oregon to be store in Oregon
Do I still pay NY tax even though car won't even touch anywhere near NY?
Or get away with 0% Oregon sales tax?
Any wise word would be appreciated.
Sorry for OT but I know rennlisters are knowledgable on all these little tricks.

You will pay taxes where you’re a resident. I live in GA and NY, but I’m a GA resident so my cars are purchased in GA, and I used to keep a car in NY with GA plates. If I purchased a car in NY I would pay GA taxes. Doesn’t matter where the car stored that’s why they ask for your license at purchase.

If you are asking how you can find a loop hole; you are on your own.
But, if you are residing some time in Oregon, and have an address there(which i believe you will need) then I think, legally, you can register and pay taxes there.
I think this thread will get interesting...

To my knowledge you will pay sales tax to the state you register the car in.
I live in NY and have a place in NJ. My car stays in NJ garaged most of the time. NJ law the car gets registered in NJ. It so happens NJ vehicle sales taxes are 2% less than NY.
I would assume if the car stays in Oregon it’s at an address?

So what if one lives in Oregon, buys car in NY and store in NY. Now he pays 0% sales tax since he's a resident there? vs. 8.75% NY tax. Seems like govt always wants more of the two.

quite the opposite. If you register the car in NY you will pay NY sales tax. If you register it in Oregon you'll pay Oregon sales tax.

now if in NY for 6 months plus one day you have a problem because you’re now a legal NY residents. I’ve had this fight twice with NY and won both times as it’s legit. 51% of people win residency in NY, and they will audit the crap out of you. Not worth it if you’re cheating.
