Why do we need GT cars at all when Randy Pobst can turn a 1:35.5 at Laguna in a 992 Carrera S

^ PCA1983, need equal track conditions, equal tires, and equal drivers to compare. No one is denying that .2 GT3RS is significantly faster than .1 GT3 with regular factory Cup 2 tires and equal drivers and track conditions, but the difference is roughly the same as between Cup 2 vs a racing slick.

The 991.2 GTS is faster than a 991.1 GT3 on most tracks...

Those times posted are the Porsche factory teams' best efforts in stock production cars (except the GT2 RS MR, which is slightly modified from stock, posting a world record at that time for a production car).

Save your money and try to put in an order for 992 GT3. Will most likely do sub 7 min in the ring. Finally be able to put cup 2 R’s on a “base” GT car as well (new wheel size). If they had them for current 991.2 and paired with Magnesium’s I bet it wouldn’t be far off of an RS. Gotta keep that on the low. Might rile up some folk.

But the GT3 RS is also in a totally different price league.
Check out these hot Nordschleife lap times by Porsche factory teams...
You are comparing Apples versus Oranges.

6.5% lap time improvement. 100% cost premium.

991.2 GT3 RS was on Cup 2R tires, which is almost a slick. That alone accounts for most of the delta between the 991.2 GT3 vs GT3 RS. Per another thread, Cup 2R is twice the cost of the Cup2 and only delivers it's higher grip for about 1 track day or less, so basically a cheater tire used to get better official lap times, rather than a tire for realistic use for track days.

Someone needs to take all of these cars out, same day on same track, same tires, good pro driver, and get the lap times so we can really compare. IIRC, the 991 GT2 RS couldn't keep up with a 991 Cup car.

PAG didn’t design and build the RS to only be as fast as the GT3. Stop deluding yourselves.

Apples to apples it’s faster. Not faster enough to justify the premium for you then stick with the GT3.

Speed costs money.

Most of the delta, not all ...

I like the RS better.

Because I'm a poseur.

OP...I totally get your feedback and opinion. The back and forth reminds me of the time I was looking for new running shoes in Chicago. Was living in Old Town and i walked to the nearest location. I was do for new shoes and the folks wanted to fit me perfectly based on a myriad of items. I looked at the wall, picked the pair i liked, and walked out with new shoes. Took less than five minutes. Meanwhile, I see people running outside, fitting multiple pairs, and wanting the perfect fitment. I can appreciate that service but for me unnecessary, as I just wanted what I like. It was not much different when buying the RS. Man do I love this car!!! That said, just like the shoes, optimal performance will primarily be determined by my abilities. Cheers!

The Cup 2Rs gain approximately 1s per minute which translates to 7s faster on the 'Ring..This translates to a 7'03'' which i'm sure i've heard mentioned previously from one of the factory test drivers. Like for like a solid 10s faster 'Ring lap time over the similarly shod 991.2GT3 is realistic IMO..The power difference is a virtually insignificant 20HP, exact same weight so the gain can be attributed to wider tyres and higher downforce.
This seems a very logical and realistic conclusion.

Nobody gets the full details, but the cars that are used for the record laps are far from ‘stock’ production cars. Official lap times are big marketing but the rules and supervision are quite relaxed, so any manufacturer will push the boundaries as far as they can (or choose, in order to leave margin for the next car they produce). That being said, Porsche are probably among the lesser cheaters.

I kind of wanted the difference to be bigger so that I could justify getting an RS, which I've lusted after for years, so a bit sad actually that it didn't work out that way, but I guess I'm also a bit relieved too, since I wasn't keen on paying track insurance for such an expensive car.

I think the jump from the 997 to 991 was much larger. I suspect that the jump from the 991 to 992 won't be quite as large, but maybe Porsche will pull something surprising out of their engineering hat.
Totally agree with you, though. I don’t think that the difference is big enough to justify spending the delta. They are from the same generation. But that is just me. The jump from the 997 to 991 was huge. Curious to see if Porsche pulls off a similar jump with the 992. We’ll see!

The difference is massive at least 4s per minute relative to the .1. The actual difference in terms of the driving experience is also massive, front end grip, pitch under hard braking in to corners. Grip in high speed sweepers.

The difference I have personally put on the 991.2 GT3 is about 2 to 3 s per minute under competiton conditions on the turgid CUP2 N2 tires. The 991 GT3 in both guises is completely outgunned everywhere. Its simple, go in a competition run under a national authority and see how it goes.

I can tell you having done this under a national body - this is ~ equivalent to 20 places in a sprint competition, its huge.

In terms of the overall driving experience its not even close.

Words fail me - you see the massive differences on the clock - the RS is in a totally different class
