Doing this now in NJ. There is only OEM glass, apparently nobody else makes a replacement. Both the dealer and Safelight told me the same thing. Dealer doesn’t do their own install, they have a glass specialist do it, maybe Quality Glass? In any event, if I use safelight, my insurance pays them directly so I don’t have to pay first and then submit for reimbursement. And I’ve used the local safelight guys before, they are good, so will use them again. But, for the glass, they said they have to use the OEM because nobody else makes it.

I’m curious what the price for an OEM windscreen is in NJ. I’ve had mine replaced twice in Australia - $4500AUD (approx $3,500USD) fitted. Thankfully covered by insurance.

A couple years ago was chatting with an someone who was in the auto glass industry for 30 years. His current job was assisting a Chinese company to set up a manufacturing process in a southern state so they could supply OEM glass to assembly plants in the southern US. When asked about the quality of OEM and aftermarket glass he said there wasn’t much difference anymore. I suspect because the thinner glass being used in modern cars has to meet a higher standard otherwise it would delaminate quickly when running heat through the defroster with very cold temperatures on the outer surface.

OEM windshield installed is about $950 cash (without insurance) installed in the US (Florida). Insurance companies use aftermarket glass by default, but if no aftermarket glass is available, they will use OEM. I got aftermarket glass installed last year (FUYAO brand), and I like it better than OEM, as it is a little thicker, and therefore less prone to crack. (I had 3 OEM windshields in a 18 month timespan, which all cracked with small rocks thrown into it from the road.) My insurance company said I could get another OEM windshield, but that I would have to pay $500 out of pocket (windshield replacements are a no-deductible service in Florida). Since I'd had so many OEM's break, I opted for aftermarket, which is still in one piece.

for a 991.2, the dealer would have charged about $2000 installed, safelight is around $1700 installed all in, I think just the glass itself is $1400 or so. As noted above, I’m told there is only the OEM option.

While I'm typically OEM or nothing, the value prop is there for what is a consumable item in my book. If it sucks, then it was only a $400 experiment.

In fact, Safelite installed an OEM windshield in my 997.2 TTS at the Porsche dealership I used when I lived in Atlanta.

I can assure you Pilkington makes one, a local glass place I've used in the past quoted me $400 installed vs $1610 for OEM. They said that they're happy to do either just the same, but Pilkington is highly reputable North American made stuff. I used it on my E92 M3 and had no complaints.

Looks perfect - the guy at the glass shop even commented that it was an exceptionally nice, dead-on OEM match.
Just FYI for anybody looking at alternatives.
