Delaminated Dunlops (Sport Maxx Race 2)
While going through my second set of Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2s on a GT3RS I have been vocal about how good the tires were in comparison to the regular Michelin Cup2s, especially in terms of performance/durability ratio.
I think it's an impression shared by other MaxxRace2 users on the forum.
Encouraged by my experience, a GT2RS owner and fellow rennlister decided to try them out.
Everything was well until this happened:
The inside of the rear right tyre delaminated at high speed (250 kph+) on the autobahn.
Fortunately there was no loss of pressure.
The tires were brand new and had about 1000 kms of street driving and about 600 kms track (Ring) driving in them.
Not sure if this is due to higher loads put though the gt2rs or just a tyre defect.
Either way, decided to go back to the Cup2s for track duty for the time being.

What are the DOT code dates?
What were your cold tire pressures?

What pressure was he running at? Did he readjust the inflation for high speed road use after track time? Had he run over anything?

This could be a manufacturing defect and the tire replaced under the tire warranty. Hey manufacturing always has a small percentage of defects and the tire should be covered. I love my Dunlop Maxx Race 2's. Faster times, better wear than the Cup 2's.

First, glad that your friend is OK and that the tire delamination didn't cause a horrible accident on the autobahn! Could be a tire defect of some sort. That said 600kms at the Ring is about 372 miles (or about 3.5 average track days). Not knowing how your friend set his tire pressures or managed his tire temps at the Ring, it is possible that either of those (incorrect PSI or F), may have contributed to accelerated wear on the tires especially given the immense power of the GT2RS...again this is without knowing your friend's driving style or how his car was set-up/aligned. A lot of variables for sure but it still looks like a defect. I've seen tires driven to the cords and they don't usually chunk like that.

Wow that is scary. I am a die hard Michelin fan as well and was planning SP Cup2's for the next set on this car but I cant get over the grip on the Sport Maxx 2's. They are not the quietest but they are some fun tires.

It might be manufacturing issue but it is important to understand what was the tyre pressure and which Autobahn. Some of them have very abrasive surfaces or might be something he/she ran over some kms ago.

What camber was he running?
Hypothesis: high downforce at speed increases load on the tires. Higher camber would focus that load on the inside edges, working the tire carcass and potentially causing it to overheat. I suspect that contributed even at stock camber, but the high downforce setting on the wing and every extra bit of camber would make the issue worse.
