Default Can I trust the reading on the TPMS?

So, going to the track for the first time and trying to wrap my head around all the procedures. The question I have now is, can I use the TPMS to accurately measure the tire pressure? I did some autocross and found it to show pretty much the same as my handheld pressure meter.

get a really accurate pressure gauge. one that is calibrated. I would not rely on the TPMS

Set pressures with a good gauge.

Watch pressures on track for increase, or more importantly a rapid decrease in 1 tire.

Generally i have found the TPMS is within 1 lb of a good gauge.

Set pressure with a high quality good gauge..Longacre has some.

TPMS to monitor tire pressures while on track has proven to be very accurate though.

If this is your first track day just set pressure at stock cold psi and don't bother with it. Concentrate on listening to your instructor, noting flag stations and run off areas, having fun, ask questions and learning the track and skills your instructor is teaching

I've thought it interesting that Porsche - at least up to 991.1 never showed temperature with pressure. BMW and Audi do on some of their cars. Would be nice to know for the track.

I never trusted TPMS but they always were accurate in the recent Porsche cars

I've compared TPMS to my digital gauge that is supposedly nice. Car's TPMS typically reads a bit high, but within about 0.5 – 1.0 psi. So if gauge says 28, TPMS says 28 cold but if tire gets up to 28.5, TPMS rounds up to 29.

I've found TPMS sensors to be 1.0-1.5 psi higher than my Longacre. I don't rely on my TPMS for accurate tire pressure readings but I do use it to monitor CHANGES in tire pressure while on track. If my gauge reads 28psi cold and my TPMS indicates 29psi cold, mid-session on track if I note my TPMS psi readings rising to 34psi I feel reasonably confident knowing that my psi is +5 (from cold ) and actual should be closer to 33psi

The absolute pressure measurement is not necessarily accurate as mentioned above. However, watching the relative change in pressures can be helpful.

Same here, within 1 lb to good gauge. Wife just go a new Benz and not only does it show accurate TP but it shows each individual tire Temp!

Pretty sure 992 GT3 is going to improve this a bunch with track display of pressure and temp, possibly with sensors in tire tread like Michelin Connect.

Same. As noted above I use it mostly to monitor rate of change than absolute values.

Agree with all above. I run with the TPMS up in the instrument cluster during a session and it saved me from a potential disaster going into T1 at Auto Club Speedway in a 991.1 RS. I always check my pressures crossing the start finish line there. Two years ago I noted my right rear was down to 12! I immediately slowed down and turned down to the inside and limped back to the pits. If I didn't have that TPMS information I would have gone into that turn at 150 mph and most likely straight into the wall! I love TPMS.
