FWIW, the tank can sometimes be a pain to get water into after hard driving. Open the cap and there can be standing water above the screen. Try to get it in the tank with a finger and it won't go. Let it sit for an hour and the water above the screen will be gone and it'll take a gallon to a gallon and a half. And they will use the water quickly. 20 minutes on track with 85 degrees absent temperature will use a gallon.

Not with a turbocharged motor if you want to make good power and midrange torque. With higher octane, you can make more boost before detonation - turbochargers have to spin faster at altitude to produce that air pressure, but they can do it on the GT2 RS (certainly at midrange rpm, if not 7k).

Another explanation. It is a known issue that the water tank level sensor could give wrong reading. Something to do with the sensor is not cleaned properly before installing.

Sorry, I'm away on travel right now, so haven't been able to try the better octane fuel. I'll do so as soon as I get back home, in about a week and a half, then post an update here!

Followup on this issue - when I got back home, I had the issue again on my first drive. At this point I was on half a tank of gas, so I went to a different location and filled it up. Haven't been able to reproduce since. So I'm inclined to think that the 91 octane from my regular gas station is marginal for the application, though I can't say for certain without going through a few more tanks of gas.

I did notify the dealer and they want to take a look. Taking it down there on the 15th this month so they can see if it's triggered any internal messages/warnings/codes.

I'll post again when more information becomes available.
