Default How to get more headroom?

I've searched and the topics I find don't seem to really give me the answer I am looking for.

I'm tall and am looking at a GT3 or a GT4 as a street car with occasional track (2-3x/year max). I am 6'6" but my problem is I am mostly trunk (more trunk than legs)

Sat in 1 997.1 GT3 and it was kinda cramped and I have less than 0.5 inch headroom. I sat in a GT4 with 18 ways and didn't have enough headroom. I sat in a GT4 with LWBs and had more than 0.5 inch but putting a helmet on would probably not work. Sat in a couple 997.2s (non GT3s) and they were a bit roomier, but headroom still not plentiful. Sat in a 991.1 GT3 with buckets and it was similar to the GT4 with LWBs. Of the cars I sat in, the 991.1 and the GT3 with LWBs offered the most headroom, but neither enough to comfortably fit in with a helmet. Like many cars on the market, it appears that the stack of the seat mounts could be less and give more headroom.

So, is there a seat and mount that can give more headroom? Don't really desire to put a race seat in the car, but if that is what works then I would consider it. I might have to swap seats when I go to the track but then I figure you get into all kinds of headaches with airbag lights. I hate the idea of aftermarket sliders, but would like it if my wife could drive it as well (she's a foot shorter, but leg length isn't that much different). I saw a link to a GMG seat mount but there was zero info on any headroom changes it offered- it appeared to not change the amount of available headroom. How do the NBA players fit in these things? Take of the seat and sit on the fake rear seat carpet?

TIA.

I’m 6’8 and fit just fine in my GT3RS with LWBS. However I’ve had this issue in many other cars that I’ve owned. My fix was to have a custom rail built and essentially bolt the seat to the floor. Joey Seely from E-Motion engineering has done this for me a few times.

Good luck bud!

You
can remove the seat cushion in the 918 buckets found in Gt4 and 991 gt3. I am 6’7” and get in easily with a helmet at the track.

Just velcroed in, cones out easily.

Also autoquest sells the seat angle adjusters. Huge help for the bucket seats.

For the 987/997 gen sport bucket seats, aka GT2 seats, Cantrell Motorsports make an adjustable mount. I think the lowest set of holes is an inch lower. Can also tilt the seat. I have them in a Cayman R. Should also work for a 997 GT3.

Thanks for the referral Sean : )

OP, our owner Gavin is also 6'7' and likewise has little trouble or comfort issues sitting in the carbon buckets with our adjusters installed. I'd be happy to set you up with some if you'd like to try them out.

The adjusters work great and also help with track helmets. More room between the helmet and the head rest so much more comfortable. I know several people who bought entirely new race seats simply to fit better with a helmet. Not needed with the Seat adjusters by Autoquest. I have a long torso as well and never had a problem but I did notice it would brush the roof liner a bit, with the adjusters plenty of room and much more comfort on long trips. Best money I spent and don't miss the sofa seats at all

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad to hear you are enjoying them as much as we have been. It is quite the improvement

I ended up buying a 2015 GT3 with 18 way sofas. It’s ok in the street but I do need some headroom with a helmet. I did 1 track event but had the seat reclined more than I’d like it to be.

Does anybody have the GMG bases with a Sparco SPX? Seems like that is the solution but I can’t get anybody to confirm there is more headroom (even GMG can’t tell me).

A local professional athlete who is 6' 10" tall had the entire seating area lowered a few inches in his Porsche so he would fit.
Likely not inexpensive.

6'5" and fit great in 991 with LWB seats with helmet on. I do wish the seat would go about .5-1" lower but it works for the amount of track days I do. On my 997 car with buckets I just took the seat cushions out for a track day. They are just velcro in. Sort of the same on the 991 LWB seats too.

I went down to the garage and took a couple of measurements with seat cushion in and removed on my 991.2 GT3 with buckets. Removing the cushion results in a 1.25" gain in headroom. Also the width at the bottom is a bit less as the sides of the seats are tapered inward.

TPC Racing just come out with some seat angle adjusters for 991 Light Weight Buckets (LWB). I have sat in the Trac Spec angle adjusters and the TPC....TPC angles back just a little more and probably will provide you with more leg and head room.

haha you must have never driven an R8 or Huracan! Tons of headroom in the GT3 by comparison. Not much you can do with the roof / headliner, so as others have already said, its all about the seat. I saw a set of brackets that tilts the LWBs backwards slightly. That will add some headroom.
