What a timely thread. I literally JUST got off the phone with a friend (a wholesale buyer) and asked him to find me one also and to check out pricing. That silver one above came up in discussion also, but form what Ive seen, there really isn't a huge price cut to buy one of these at auction versus in a dealer or an individual. I was expecting to pay 10-15% less at auction but that simply isn't the case with these cars.

the car wasn't cpo'd when it was auctioned. single owner car at time of auction. my local dealer, Arlington, picked it up, likely, for a quick flip. They are not exactly known to be a "good guy" dealer.

SA said the car would qualify for the CPO program, but wasn't offered publicly as such.

If a non-Porsche (Subaru/ford/Chevy) Dealer has a GT car on the lot 85-95% of the time it's the owner's car.

Aren't these cars supposed to be tracked? All the comments about the auction cars being tracked makes me laugh. The point of the GT3 is that it can go from the street to the track and back. Not to mention that with the engine issue i would rather get a car for a little less that was driven because the miles should help to trigger the follower issue.

It's a car, a depreciating asset, that should be driven, not just left sitting in the garage. Which is what it sounds like everyone wants as a used car buyer, a car that was never used. I hate the winter because i can't get the car out more often. Warmer weather can't get here soon enough. I guess I'll have a worthless GT3 soon...

The tracked GT car doesn't scare me, provided the appropriate maintenance was done. However for the 90% of buyers out there, that IS an issue. It may be a point of leverage for negotiation

Seems like lots of sound advice! That car went to auction for a reason.....the question is "for what reason"?
I kind of look at cars that go to auction as cars that have a foggy spot in their history....sending to auction puts a disconnect in the ownership history....I like to know the history of the cars I purchase and talk to the owner or the dealer who knows the owner as a longtime client, etc. An auction car makes this practically impossible.

So the scenarios for buying used are:
1. Go to a dealer who has a relationship with the seller who traded in the car and you may get a story like, "One of our long-term clients who has a large number of cars just traded this towards his new .2. We've serviced the car from day one. He tracked the car two occasions as you can see there is no peppering on the front fascia and rear quarters and these tires are the original and look new. We've gone over the car and everything is great, tires are good, brakes are over 80%. The owner doesn't cut corners and took great care of this car like he does all his others."

2. Buy from a private owner...preferable the 1st owner....not the 3rd or 4th. I like to use PCA classifieds to both sell and buy. Again, you get the history and are typically dealing with true P-car folks.

3. Buy a car the dealer picked up at auction. Cross your fingers and hope you discover any underlying issues prior to purchase and not after purchase. Even a PPI will miss things and in their defense, a PPI is not and can not be fail-proof.

In regards to your statement on tracking and that these cars were meant to be tracked, that is true, BUT tracking typically introduces wear on components, expendibles (tires and brakes), and paint peppering. You can make an even more generalized statement, that "these cars are meant to be driven" but the miles affect the value. Just as miles affect value, so does tracking.

The biggest issue with looking at Manheim is that you need to be able to compare year to year (2014's are significantly less $ than 2015's) and the spec's are all over the board....one may have had an original of MSRP of $131K while another may be spec'd out closer to $165K.

My advice: Don't chase price, chase the spec you want .... get the service records because the GT3 service schedule is different than the other P-cars and if it is behind on service, you can easily be looking North of $2K

I would think as it relates to GT cars auction cars most likely have a "story". In lessor priced cars a dealer may send a non dealer repted car to auction. Another thing is a reputable dealer that has a car with a story ie past damage will send it to auction so they don't have to tell the story to a retail customer. Most dealers/wholesalers are not fond of "story" cars. While this does not really relate because of the hurricane, Houston has about 500,000 auction cars which include Ferrari's, Porsches, Lambos etc.

Don’t buy the auction car. Plenty of .1’s you’ll find just what you want. I never tracked mine and sold with 6k miles.

Are auction prices really a good indicator when looking at a dealer car.....no way to know the MSRP which could be a huge spread depending on the options.....

Yep...is it really worth it to save a bit via auction? To me, for this kind of money, I would spend more for the peace of mind. My mantra on used cars is always buy the seller, not the car. When you are buying a car at auction, that scares me IMO.

i wasnt considering buying a GT3 at auction. the car that my porsche dealer has for sale was acquired via auction. according to the SA, the car is eligible for the CPO program. my due diligence is a must. i'm still unsure as to the "story". car was definitely tracked, unknown paint work. Single owner car from Georgia (so likely not much snow)

as an update, the dealer comms have gone cold/silent once i inquired about a DME report, engine code, and having the car for inspection on a lift. i think they are looking for a less suspecting buyer....

which is probably a red flag....lol

Ah, an auction car. I'd watch the dealer as well.
