Thoughts on 991.2 gt3 manual vs 987.2 spyder
#16
I have a 981 Spyder acquired last fall when I traded in 991.1 GT3, and love it. Also have a 991.2 GT3 Touring on order arriving this spring and am making financial maneuvers to be able to keep both, because the Spyder is just so special.
Agree with most above above about Spyder and GT3 being fairly different cars, except I don’t think a GT3 needs to be tracked to be enjoyed, but it certainly helps to at least have some great twisty backroads to go drive it on. Same could be said about Spyder, though admittedly it’s a little tamer and can be enjoyed a little more even around town and onto freeways, etc.
Assuming your 987 Spyder is a manual and in very good condition, it’s a keeper. And so will be the 991.2 GT3 Touring.

Best advice here, by a long shot, is to keep both for a while and then decide. Make sure you keep the Spyder long enough and do enough drives in it after the "new" factor (or at least some of it) with the GT3 Touring wears off. A friend bought a GT4 and kept his 987.2 Spyder. It didn't take long before the GT4 was for sale—it was a better car, but he had more fun (far more) in the Spyder. I think he would have had a tougher time with getting rid of a 991.2 GT3, however...

Hey Pete,
I will take on this advice and do a thorough drive and decide after a while. I have a feeling that I am going to keep both. Out of curiosity which one do you personally like more? By the way I am subscriber to 000 and it's a great magazine, keep up the great work.

Last month's drive in France in the GT3 Touring has me wondering if it's the first GT3 to knock the 997 RS 4.0 off its peg, so there may be an answer in there for you. On the other hand, if my 914 disappeared tomorrow after 28 years with me, the only modern Porsche that I've felt might effectively do it what it does for me is the 987.2 Boxster Spyder—so that says something about the Spyder. It's just a very special car.
Thanks! Working on something very special for Issue 005 as we speak...

I sold my 991.1 GT3 and kept my 987.2 Spyder. It is way more fun to drive on the street. The GT3 was only fun at high rev's or pushing in corners at extra legal speeds.
Hold on to your 987.2 until you can drive your new GT3 and compare. The 987.2's are holding their value so waiting a few extra months for the comparison does not really cost much.
