not all the tubing are falling out. but some of them on each car were failing. some i literately have to touch it, it would dislodge. would it fail? i do not know. but i sure dont want to find out. so i just fixed it.

^ Smart move, and nice for other road and track users, too.
Those 996/997 coolant lines give me the shivers not only for track events, but also mountain roads—where a driver might not be at the limit but the stakes are much, much higher.
More important to address than ever as the cars age. Good on the OP to flag this "news item," if only to bring attention back to this.

Lucky no one was killed.
I have to say I am always amazed by a lot of this stuff - it often relates to a lack of track craft /experience.
Simple, spanner check on hoist before track day - inc. suspension, brakes, hoses, coolant, oil, tire condition, re-torque/check of lug nuts etc etc. Preventative maintenance e.g. known problems.
Moreover, I can't believe half the youtube videos one sees of the ring. Large numbers of people, that can't drive, using video to show they can't drive, whilst flashing past other people that can't drive and don't even know there is any one going past them. No wave throughs or emergency light signals to drive by. Driving in tee shirts go figure. Wandering around the cars after an off instead of getting behind the armco and calling it in/ waving down from behind armco - go figure.
Notwithstanding the fact that there are other cars, with different performance characteristics on the same track or even the fact the sessions are open which can lead to all sorts of incidents - simple things such as punctures that can leave a car stuck on the line over a blind crest for example.
In the UK its just as nuts, track days seem to be a free for all - no track licences or log books required.
Its great that these venues exist, however basic track craft and or licensing should be a minimum requirement for speed use. This protects all drivers, the competent from the incompetent and the incompetent from themselves.

Terrible news, at least we can learn from this big accident, particularly to release the throttle pedal on blind corners when there is no marshall.
I was not aware of coolant issues on the mezger engine, here i found the explanation from sharkwerks
