using the tax laws as they are designed isn’t tax evasion. It’s being smart. Most of us are very charitable but govt isn’t the charity that needs the money. They waste it.

On top of that, don't most states have whistleblower programs for the purpose if they see a Montana plate regularly parked and stored in a local driveway or parking spot/or being driven in that area to be reported to local agencies? I would think that indicates it's not smart, it's avoiding taxes that are owed.

How your state government spends tax revenue is another argument entirely.

RV owners who registered in Montana convicted for tax evasion
https://www.denverpost.com/2008/05/21/rv-owners-who-registered-in-montana-convicted-for-tax-evasion/Yeah, real smart LOL.
I'm not here to tell people how to live their lives but the whole MT registration IS tax evasion in most states.
However, since most police probably don't care and the chance of catching you in an audit is probably slim, I see the real risk is with insurance. If you get in an accident, the adjuster is paid to find any possible way to void your claim... making false claims about the specifics of the car may actually be reason for issuing a denial letter. NOT Smart.

I’ve given this some thought a while back since I see a lot of MT plates at cars and coffee in my state. I dabbled a few months ago when I was gearing up to get my GT3. Called my insurance, travellers, and I asked for a quote. Told them I’m interested in registering car in another state. Her immediate response was “wouldn’t have to be MT would it?”
Apparently, travellers are or in the process for declining out of state registration especially MT plates.
In either case, too much headache for me. Taxes sucks but a necessary evil.

I do not believe insurance is an issue here. My insurance company does not ask for copies of titles or registration...only the VINs and address where the vehicles are garaged.

I always say each to his own ....my buddy in Ga is looking at possibly a 300k tax bill and fine. His cars have never driven a MT road, and he would like a do over.

I'd do a Montana LLC thingy, but their plates are ugly and would ruin my whole look.
