I was at the event and heard the same from the home team. Faster than P1 and 918 (way too heavy). They'll never go into writing on it as they want to protect the P1 but the comparison tests will eventually out it. Time to open your mind...

Look,I am not contesting what they've said. I'll be waiting to see some independent testing. 3 seconds is a Hell of a lot of time difference on a track...

If any one could pull it off it would be McLaren. They make some fast cars so I would not be surprised

I can still see that smug face on the McLaren's test driver when asked which one is faster before the test.
Did you see the drag race on the recent Grand Tour episode, 918 vs. Veyron, where the 918 won that as well?

And then was destroyed by a modded Nissan SUV IIRC...

Of course.
But that SUV had 1900 HP!

Look, the new Huracan Performante has claimed it has lapped the Nurburgring in 6:52s, that is 5 secs faster than the current record. Of course, Lamborghini's own Aventador SV has lapped the Ring in 6:59s, however, when the SV is ran on other tracks around the world, it was way off the pace compared to the 918. So I have my doubts regarding Lamborghini's claim, and plus the fact that the Ring runs a lot faster in its current configuration.

If the new Mclaren 720 is 3 seconds than the 918 on a 2min track, then it would be truly spectacular! As a 918 owner, it wouldn't bother me at all. This will be good for all of us, as it will raise the game among the different manufacturers, Porsche and Ferraris included.

Well you could always try it with the P1 first. If the 720S can't beat the P1, it has no chance agains the 918.

On a Track like Silverstone, a 918 on my maths would be around 80Mtrs plus in front at the first corner. Not seen anything on the this new car that leads me to believe that it will corner quicker or out- brake quicker than a 918 over any of the 13 corners, This is without the advantage that the 918 will also have on the straight's..

3 secs plus sounds about right in Favour of a 918, round a track like Silverstone.

Thanks! hahaha Yeah the 570 is a special car for sure. McLarens have surged in popularity I think because they've been sticking to the pure performance theme. I initially though it odd that they went a little emotionless at first with the 12C and made it a pure tech achievement, but now I understand.

If you are fast, but rather clinical... its better than being pretty and having no substance in the long run.

All this talk about track times... can be argued ad nauseum. I only care what track time I set in the car I'm in and how it feels to me driving it. First, the 720S will be great, but it won't be their track special. Second, let's wait to see what McLaren actually says officially. Third, if you haven't driven a McLaren on track - you won't understand. My LT is brilliant on track and I honestly only compare to myself. Having driven the GT4 at Sonoma, it's brilliant too. But if I would track a streetable track car - it would be the LT hands down.
