I know the platinum wheels don't have a clear coat. What about the black ones or silver? My Cayenne RS wheels are a similar color (GT silver) with a clear coat. In 12K miles they don't have a single rock chip. Is it the lack of a clear coat causing the problem or is there something about the design of the new GT3 wheels?

Maybe they have a strong turbo-fan effect which helps pull cooling air over the brakes but also sucks up rocks. If that's the case, we could have a problem regardless of how the wheels are painted. Thoughts?

All wheels are prone to chips.

I believe from what I've seen is that there is an issue with the paint adhesion (black or platinum) to the base primer coat.

There was never an issue with the Satin platinum Carrera S 991 wheels in the past from what I've seen. A chip here or there of course.

I think there may have been a change in paint/primer or the way it's applied.

I'm pretty sure that my silver wheels are clearcoated.

NO chipping on my black wheels, even though I have driven on the streets several times littered with stones. I had C-Quartz applied on the wheels shortly after delivery

Interesting. I guess silver isn't immune... Thanks for posting! And sorry to hear the news.

So far inconclusive results; the N is too small to provide a valid information for now. Only have 36 out of total (number of owners) responded. Lets hope that majority or a sizeable number of owners will participate and respond.

Any resolution by PCNA?

I have the Platinum and have a couple of those small white chips. Not too bad, yet, but will be an issue in the next 18 months.

I would like Porsche to provide some sort of Credit that can be used, in the course of the ownership while under warranty, for each owner to have their wheels painted outside. So, say in 3 years I would have the ability to have my rims powder coated black and they would give some sort of allowance - just my $.02

My wheels are now an utter mess after 6000 miles. Probably made worse from the dirty chip seal roads here.

I've requested full wheel resto on PAGs check book. Taking car today to dealer for inspection and pictures to send to PAG. Don't expect a fast resolution so starting this early and suggest others do likewise.

I'm now convinced the issue is primarily the wheel & spoke design. However the lack if s clear coat has accelerated the situation. I will be having the re painted wheels sealed with a Matt or satin clear coat...

So far, just a protocol for taking it to the dealer for a warranty claim, which, due to recent lingering cold temps, snow, ice, grit, gravel, and salt, I have not yet been able to follow through on.

It is definitely the wheel design. The thin face profile results in most of the spoke in rotation perpendicular to any impact. The color doesn’t matter … the chips are just more visible on black.
